Fred Thompson: Iraq had WMDs before U.S. invaded

http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071001/NEWS/71001030/1001/SPORTS

Newton, Ia. — Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson said today he was certain former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, a point of contention in the 4.5 years since the war began.

"We can't forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there, he clearly had had WMD. He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program," the former Tennessee senator told an audience of about 60 at a Newton cafe.

...

Thompson made the statement while explaining why he felt the war was justified, despite the Bush administration's chief justification for the invasion turning out not to be verifiable.

"In my estimation, his intent never did change," Thompson said. "And by today, he clearly would have had that (weapons program) rejuvenated."

2. Well's that's certainly true...
Saddam had WMD's back in the 80's right? And the 80's is "prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invastion", isn't it?

6. Saddam once had bloody diarrhea, obviously he housed biological weapons
The Dem candidate will cut through Thompson on like high pressure water jets slicing angel food cakes.

I look forward to a Thompson nomination.

7. Give it up, Freddy.
It may get you a few votes from the fools who seek redemption for believing the WMD lies but it makes you look crazy. Four years of combing through Saddam's files and receipts would have turned up traces of WMD programs by now and the MSM would have bombarded us with it.

20. Why not both?
Saddam destroyed his WMD stockpiles and ended his nuclear program right after the 1991 gulf war, just like he said he did.

in his work parking lot that said:

"Fred 2008: A bullet in every terrorist. A fist in every hippie's face."

Of course, said owner is an asshole.

My husband's a former Ranger - he's not exactly small, but the car's owner is. :)

P.S. Hubby has a Dead Head sticker on his car.

Didn't he get the memo that even BUSH as admitted there were no WMD?? And didn't he hear about Wolfowitz admitting that they KNEW there was probably no WMD, but that was the best excuse for war?

Is ANYBODY this stupid??

24. Well since it is a fact that we supplied military arms to Iraq ourselves,
we would have no one to blame but ourselves if they did have them and had used them on us. But seeing as they didn't have them at hand at the time of the illegal invasion and we knew it the whole point of continuing that line of reasoning for invading Iraq is just downright stupid.

25. Just dumb and dumber...
And there are folks out there who really want to believe that idiocy.

Although Saddam may certainly have wanted nukes, Israel had them (shh...), and India and Pakistan had them, and Iran wanted them, as well. But we had pretty much shut him down. As I understand it.

32. Fred is demonstrating the need for any candidate to bow to "Republican Reality"
"Republican Reality" is not reality as you or I know it. In Republican Realityland, Saddam Hussein really did have WMD. These weapons were moved to Syria--or to Lebenon or beamed onto a starship on its way home to Alpha Centuri. To say anything else would betray Republican Reality and mark him as a true traitor to the cause--not to mention branding him as stark raving mad to the true believer.

Or maybe ol'Fred's just not the sharpest knife in the draw.

36. If Iraq had these WMDs how could Bush tell Aznar "We'll be in Baghdad by the end of March"?
Answer me that, Fred!

Not only were there no WMDs in Iraq, Bush knew it full well before the war. His boastful prediction about the success of the coming war only makes sense if he understood the alleged WMDs did not exist.
