Foes hit continued abstinence funding

By Cheryl Wetzstein
September 30, 2007

Congress again has extended funding for a core abstinence-education program, sparking protests from sex-education advocates who want Democrats to pull the plug on such programs.

"Their actions defy logic and common sense," said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth.

First, Congress funds what Mr. Wagoner called unproven abstinence programs. Then it commissions a study that shows they don't work, but lawmakers ignore those results and continue to fund the programs.

"Teens deserve better policies. We all deserve better leaders," said Mr. Wagoner, whose organization stresses rights, respect and responsibility in sex education.

Rep. James P. Moran, Virginia Democrat, said he supported "with frustration" the second three-month extension of the $50 million Title V abstinence-education program and several health programs that serve low-income families.

The health programs are effective, but unfortunately they are "held hostage" to the abstinence program, "which prizes ideology over science and ... harms our children through the provision of medically inaccurate information," Mr. Moran said Wednesday. The Senate passed its extension of Title V and other health programs on Thursday.

1. They don't really have the power we gave them yet. We have to wait until 2008.
Then, they'll seriously discuss what they can do to get us off of their backs.

2. An incredible waste of tax money
forcing a religious perspective on others with our tax dollars. And its an utter failure because many christian kids have porn star sex while still maintaining their "virginity." Domestic enemies of the constitution and fucking weapons against the brains of our kids.

6. Gee, could this part have something to do with it?

(Please ignore the unfortunate fellow's last name. We don't need to go there.)

The Republicans have woven an intricate web of nastiness over the past decade of their stranglehold on Congress, and it is going to take YEARS to untangle it and roll some of this shit back. Anyone who wants to hold their breath for everything going their way immediately, well, good luck with that. Me, I'm going to keep fighting to get more Democrats in Congress and the White House.

7. This absolutely sucks.
I am disgusted. All the studies have shown that these programs DON'T WORK.
I cannot keep supporting these pandering asshats. I've had it.

I have supported the Dems "with frustration" for YEARS. I'm about over it. The system seems to be a big clusterfuck at this point which
our party is not able or willing to change.

When is someone in the reality-based community going to start writing the legislation for these programs?

8. Ya know, I wouldn't care if it wasn't abstinence ONLY!
I think it's a good idea to do total sex ed to teens. WHY do the Pubbies insist on the "ONLY" part?
