If AIR AMERICA should be purchased by ...say...Clear Channel,
how many of you then would support a new FAIRNESS DOCTRINE?

1. I would support one even if they didn't...
of course, if they do, I will have to find something else to listen to all day at work. :(

The great thing about the Drobnys is they know HOW to build a radio network from scratch so AAR can be overrun by CC or any other group of reich-wing nuts and they'll just pop up somewhere else.

Can't stop the signal, boys!

3. I saw were Clear Channel bought radio stations in ND
and thet promptly cut off rush limbaughs programs and put someone name Ed Schultz on the air instead. I never listen to the radio but I gather Schultz is from the democratic side. But I suppose it just depends on who buys the Clear channel franchise in that state or area.

7. Not entirely correct
First, CC added Rush to their stations, seeing as they syndicate his show. Ed was doing "News and Views" on North Dakota radio under previous ownership (Jim Ingstad). Ed currently hosts one of the biggest syndicated left-leaning talk shows in the country. He's on many AAR affiliates.

Ingstad recently repurchased the CC Fargo stations from CC, and got them for $14 million less than they sold them for, making a pretty nice profit. He begged Schultz to come back to host "News and Views", in addition to the national show. And he took KFGO in a local direction, dumping Rush Limbaugh. At this time, there is no station in Fargo airing Limbaugh.

5. Yes. Too bad they've already turned so much of American radio into crap though.

First, anyone who's had the opportunity to make a bid for AAR already has. Stephen Green is the top bidder so far, but others have until Thursday to top it. CC hasn't made an offer, and they won't.

Second, CC is currently for sale itself. There's been a few snags as of late, so this will take awhile. In the meantime, they're selling off radio properties in all markets outside of the top 100.

And finally, if CC wanted to do syndicated liberal talk, they would have already done so. They have the infrastructure (via Premiere, their syndication arm), they have the on-air talents (they have some pretty good local hosts at progressive talk stations across the country) and they've already seen quite a few of their on-air hosts go to AAR and Jones to get syndicated. Rumor has it that their 800 lb. gorilla, namely Rush, forbids Premiere from syndicating liberal talk shows on a large scale. The only exception is a weekend show from Jesse Jackson. Hence, they've seen many shows go to other groups to get national syndication.

In essence, CC could have done it already and probably wiped AAR off the map, but they chose not to. If they really desired to start up their own network, they could at any time. They don't need to purchase AAR.

As for CC getting involved in liberal talk, they're in it to build up new formats. AM is suffering from a lack of viable formats, which is why there are so many conservotalkers and sports stations. Music fans listen to FM. Liberal talk, if done correctly, can thrive. But it does need attention. To their credit, CC is actually doing a very good job with the format in some markets, though they are doing a shitty job in others.
