Goodness, now I've seen Christmas displays
October 1, and 95 hot degrees in the afternoon in a suburb of Dallas - and there's a Christmas display at a local store.

I guess it's time to get our war on Christmas going. We need some of our far northern DUers to get up to the North Pole. Nothing drastic, just maybe sabotage one of the elf factories. I hear production is up, and we need to make sure our young uns suffer this year. No physical violence, mind you, just get Sgt. Carter to build one of his bombs in the tunnel of Stalag 13.

31. With the competition for audience re: Christmas related productions
You need to advertise early as most people will probably only go to one event per season.

21. Holiday songs, now that's what REALLY gets me grumpy.
I can handle the lights and the decorations fairly well, but Christmas music reliably sours my mood. Never fails. And like an allergy, the more exposure to it, the worse I feel.

I frickin HATE Xmas music!x( :argh:

3. I'm old enough to remember when most stores didn't start putting out their Xmas displays
until the day after Thanksgiving, but those days are gone forever (it seems).

19. What is it w/ this area??
Feels like we get maybe an hour between holidays with the store displays...Fourth of July morphs overnight into Halloween which morphs into Xmas which morphs into Easter. One time I saw both Halloween AND the start of Xmas down one aisle.

Bad enough we get bathing suits on the rack in February and bulky turtlenecks in August!!

Our a/c went out at work today---which shouldn't be a BIG deal on an October day..unless one works in Dallas where summer is determined to last til the first ice storm hits!

10. Absurd. All about marketing, of course,

but people know Christmas is coming and have either already finished their shopping or will wait until the last minute, like we do. Shopping on Christmas Eve is fun!

12. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one
By Xmas Eve I'm finally in the spirit and enjoy hearing the Xmas music over the intercoms in the stores and the hustle and bustle. Then we go home--put on more Xmas music, make some chocolate and wrap presents. It makes the day kinda enjoyable.

20. Shoppers are nicer on Christmas Eve, I've found.

They know "This is it" and they don't get surly if they can't find one thing because it's out of stock, they look for something else. They don't complain about standing in line to pay for things, and are generally in a holiday mood.

I love Christmas but I can't be forced to feel the spirit by ads and store promotions. It just has to feel like Christmas to me and it doesn't feel that way the day after Thanksgiving (which I support as no-shopping day, anyway.)

the economy sucks, and they are hoping that Christmas will fuel their bottom line. Not this year for me, I'll be lucky to keep my house.

22. Gross. Yet apparently, some people like 4 months of Xmas.
If everyone were like me (Bah Humbug!) then "Christmas Season" would be limited to NO MORE than 1 SINGLE WEEK of the year, say, December 18-26.

18. Started in July...
One of the Dallas oldie stations (98.7, I think) spent a whole day playing Xmas music. All day. The first song was cute/bearable, after that it was kind of nauseating--I switched channels and surfed past it for the rest of the day.

28. That's called "Christmas in July"
I don't know when it started, but it's been celebrated for decades.
It's not a serious holiday, it's just a silly excuse to have fun.

"Christmas in July is a party concept exploited as a marketing opportunity."
"Often nightclubs host parties open to the public."
"some individuals do choose to celebrate the time themselves, typically as an intentionally transparent excuse to have a party."

32. What is the concern with when stores start advertising or decorating for a holiday?
This is the second or third thread about a store's advertising or music in regards to Christmas. What exactly is the concern people have with when they do this?
