3. Because the Grammy Committee didin't think him worthy to give it to him on the air

The Grammys was a sorry program (except for seeing Al Gore give an award) in that they pushed all the music they think their ratings demographic won't want to see on TV to the backburner announcing it on the screen. I happen to like New Age music but there was none of that allowed on the show either. Maybe next year they can devote more time to substance than hype to get ratings, and people will know what won.
