is there a registry of companies that do/don't outsource to India and other places?
it seems this week, several companies I've needed to call (including Delta airlines) ALL have been routed to India for customer service.
Not only am I against this as far as outsourcing and loss of jobs domestically, at least two of the 5 calls I had to make were to people whose command of english made the transactions nearly impossible. One of the funny exchanges was I had to give a confirmation number that included several letters. I said "B as in banana", and she kept reading back to me the letter "C". I kept correcting her, and finally finally got throught when she "oh, you mean B as in Boy". erm...yeah, because the B in banana is an entirely different letter.

I'm wondering if there isn't a national registry of NONoutsourcing companies?

1. I don't think so Lerk
When I owned my business, we had to outsource some of our stuff.
Even though we contracted with American businesses, we had to make sure that THEY didn't outsource.
When you start asking that question, you can rest assured that it is never met with an enthusiastic reply.
It's like a dirty little secret that nobody wants to admit to.

4. Lerkfish, I talk to those g.d. outsource folk ALL NIGHT LONG at my job
I couldn't even BEGIN to tell you how f***ing exasperating it is and HOW MUCH IT SUCKS and not just because I am dealing with people who took the jobs of people I know. The things they do are ATROCIOUS. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR and believe me, these companies are competing for the cheapest of the cheap

7. my hats off to you, then. I don't often need to contact this many companies
I don't know how you do it. I was ready to yell at the banana woman (though I refrained), not just for the "B" part, but everything else was completely messed up and she had not a clue what I was trying to do to fix it.

there's a certain group in Mumbai India that starts EVERY sentence with the word ACTUALLY - GAWD, it drives me INSANE. THE WORST is when they are simply reading a script - you can't ask them a question because it veers off the f***ing script....AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. And OMG when I have to connect someone in India to someone in Egypt - it is downright painful. I also have customers in America who call me and plead not to be transferred overseas.....I feel their pain. :(

6. Unfortunately, it's economically feasible to outsource for many larger firms that can.
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 09:16 AM by Selatius
There's simply no competing with Chinese or Indian labor costs, and labor costs traditionally are the most expensive aspects of any enterprise you may run or own. The average wage in China is less than a dollar after you convert to USD. There's no way to compete against that in an unregulated free trade environment.

Firms that don't want to outsource often do because more cutthroat competitors who have no scruples on the issue did it and are using the extra revenue freed from labor costs to attack everybody else in the market place. For many, they either they have to go to China or India to survive, or they go under due to intense competition from firms using cheap labor.

Then you have goliath firms like Wal-Mart that demand low prices, everyday. Eventually, more firms go off-shore in order to maintain a market presence in these big-box stores because if you can't deliver the price, then they will simply deny you access to their stores, and Wal-Mart has tremendous market share nationwide.

Unregulated free trade will reduce America if it isn't addressed. Things like NAFTA, CAFTA, the WTO, etc. are going to bury the middle class and the poor.

8. That's one reason I appreciate Comcast.
I know, it's Comcast, but they hire Americans for tech support. They speak clearly and there is no problem understanding them. When I have an internet problem, I'm already frustrated. I don't need someone with a heavy Indian accent speaking at the speed of light.

products sold by MicroCenter (stores and mail). Even though certain products they sell have a manufacturer's help desk in India, you can speak to a Microcenter help desk located somewhere in Tennessee (or neighboring State - can't quite remember where it is) when you buy their moderately priced warranty package.

It's very obvious that those who are trying to rule us are out to make us a second (then third?) country. Outsourcing is their short term policy. Is it any wonder that they are kicking and screaming about a minimum wage. If it's true that peers of those who would like a technical job in India work for $1.00 per hour as reported in one of these threads, then they are going to target $5.15 as a maximum to bring the job back. In the meantime, there are cracks in our platform that might portend a major collapse because of debt.

Pretend that Cheney, PNAC, and the barons win and establish a U.S. dominated oil empire over the heads of the people of the Middle East. Will things revert to a thriving economy in this country or will they multiply our kids and taxes to expand and secure their plan? Aren't they out to make their income stable, their risks manageable by managing anc contolling, with no courts or tribunals over them? Heading back to kingdoms, but by and through technology, partnering with the most populated countries.

The pointers are there.

If a help desk person works for $1, what do the people make who took the jobs of our technicians who were making $70,000, plus - the high tech ones who had to train their replacements first - before leaving to spend more time with their families.
