What have we learned from the 'give a heart' thing? Maybe this:
Something so simple as tossing someone a graphic to be displayed in their postings can make someone's day a little brighter.

It does not take much to be kind to one another here. We can give out hearts here this month, but we can give a kind word or a kick every day of the year.

I am just as guilty at being a prick as anyone, but I do know that and I try to temper it with being nice --it's not always fun being nice though, some of the most memorable threads have been like a flaming moe.

In the end it does not hurt to tell someone you are sorry, or at least say something nice to them later on.

I won't have enough hearts to give when I donate this evening, but I do have this:

Sorry if I have offended anyone here, or been mean to you. I do love you all and enjoy posting here and reading your posts. You have made a difference in my life - a good one, even if I have never singled you out and told you so.

You've made me want to be a better man. We're still gonna argue, I will still say things at times that are probably not always nice, I am far from perfect. But know that I will still respect you on the refresh and reply :)

2. A good post! It is nice that end of the day
When after some vigorous debate, even when people are angry at each other can later go have a beer or whatever. I try to remember, that even if the person disagrees with me, it is not because they hate America, or trying to undermine the cause you are debating, we have just different flavors, and some other day we can be allies. You can't do that at certain sites, once you disagree with certain posters, you become their mortal enemy, such a waste of life energy.

5. I agree.
I said much the same in a thread yesterday.

When it comes to coming together - I think we do a right fine job of it. Of course, we also do a right fine job of eviscerating each other on occasion, too. :D

6. Well, I don't have any hearts
nor any money to donate to give hearts to others, but I love my DU family. You guys and gals have kept me sane and in the loop for years now, and I love each and every one of you here.
Happy Valentine's Day, and remember that at the bottom of it all, we are all just trying to save the world, or at least our little corner of it.

45. Sometimes I feel like it'll never get done
I have two boys, 13 and 5, and am 31 years old trying to do something to make our lives better, but there are days when it feels like I'll never finish and even if I do, could it really be worth all this? I dunno, there are good days and bad, I guess, with everything you do. But those days, and I'm sure you know the ones, where it's hard to get out of bed and go one more day, one more class...those kick my butt. I'll get there eventually, I suppose. It just kills me to watch my 13 year old screw around with his grades, because I was straight A's until I got pregnant in Junior year. It took me 13 years to get back in school. I keep telling him that he can't mess around, that his education is the most important thing. I hate that I can't just shove my experience and knowledge into his head. I just don't want him to end up like me, going back to school and interrupting his life cuz he made mistakes and didn't use his head when he was young.
Anyway, your gift was extraordinary, and it made my day so much brighter! Thank you so much for being a wonderful human being.

16. Thanks for such a lovely post. Someone gave me a heart and
I'm really appreciative, I was wondering if I was going to be picked last for the team! But you all came through, as usual.

You're so right about being nice to other people. It takes a tiny bit of extra effort to be kind or to apologize, but its well worth it to help make someone's day just a little brighter. Thanks, The Straight Story!

If drummers and bass players went on strike, music would lose it's depth and richness. Bass is really taken for granted.

I have had a 'thing' for red heads since my 20's, then met one when I was 33 and never looked bad.

She had all the california guys hitting on her, dr's, lawyers, body builders, etc - and she ended up with a dorky computer nerd like me. Must be my computer enhanced mojo :)

27. I've made it a practice to smile and be nice to people even if they
look mean and angry. A lot of times they do turn around and smile back or just nod their heads and hopefully reminds them that everything isn't usually all that bad.

I've found it easier than getting grumpy with them!

To have a heart, give a heart. It doesn't matter if you will have many or none. The idea is to brighten a day for someone who shares your ideals and hopes for a suffering humanity.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=191702&mesg_id=191702

from yesterday..

I am SO proud of my son today
I took him to the clinic for a sore throat. He is 16.There was a young man about 20 who locked his keys in his car as we walked in.After about three hours,we left, and this poor kid was still furiously trying to get the keys out of his car with a hanger. My son said"Mom,I need to help this guy out somehow"..and took one of his PRECIOUS 20 dollar bills out of his wallet.I matched it and offered it to the kid so he could get home. The look of sheer relief on his face was priceless. So was the lesson my son learned today, and the one he taught me.Pass it on.

It's like the hearts...
