Cheney's Top Aide Says War With Iran "Real Possibility in '07"
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 10:31 AM by Jacobin
As the Bush administration ratchets up pressure on Iran, Vice President Cheney’s top national security aide has been quoted by the Washington Post — in the 10th paragraph on page A18 — that war with Iran is “a real possibility” this year:

Some senior administration officials still relish the notion of a direct confrontation. One ambassador in Washington said he was taken aback when John Hannah, Vice President Cheney’s national security adviser, said during a recent meeting that the administration considers 2007 “the year of Iran” and indicated that a U.S. attack was a real possibility. Hannah declined to be interviewed for this article.

Those with knowledge of the build-up to war in Iraq will recognize John Hannah’s name. In Bush’s second term, he replaced Scooter Libby as the head of Cheney’s national security staff. During Bush’s first term, he personally wrote the first draft of the infamous speech that Secretary of State Colin Powell delivered to the United Nations, according to Powell’s former aide Lawrence Wilkerson.

Moreover, Hannah was a top source for false pre-war intelligence from Iraqi exiles that was “stovepiped” past the intelligence agencies and sent directly to the White House

I guess Cheney forgot to tell Lord PissyPants about the new war.

59. This follows their strategy - Bush lies and others tell the truth.
This time Mz Liar joined Bush in the lie - often she is one of the counters to his lies - telling the truth about their plans.

How many years have I wondered why the right wing honchos picked Bush to be their President. As each day passes - I see their strategy - he is totally without ethics. Yes, he'll be their lie carrier - he has no principles to stand on - he's just a pathetic two-bit actor for them.

They are trying to destroy the middle class, the court system, and the Presidency.

And they do it in suits and ties with the help of all their corporate friends and the barons.

Boy, we don't even know all of what we're in the process of losing.

Are we going to take back the country? Or not?

With the breakdown in the lock step of a Republican members of Congress - we've got to get more people complaining and demanding. We must embarass the media and demand news.

We must expose their corporate and foundation support and show their traitorous acts in all the ways they don't represent us, but use us.

6. With approval ratings hovering in the 12 percent range, Cheney
apparently doesn't give a rat's ass about what the country thinks. The media won't mention these interesting little facts mentioned in this non-mainstream article and Lord Pissypants is denying that he's gonna attack Iran.

On the bright side, CNN hasn't composed any IranWar theme music or graphics as yet, so maybe there's a little more time

And the Bush administration has some fences to mend with the corporate bigwigs who run the major media. What better gift than lots of neat-o explosions and footage of brave men pushing buttons and watching something blow up miles away? It's not like anyone you know (probably) is going to be under those bombs, unable to fight back, get away, or even know that the bomb is coming until it's too late.

I posted about it and then I didn't see it again, after. So...I assumed it was a test. Their music already is designed to keep folks on edge....that jittery thing they play constantly.

I even wonder if they aren't using subtle techniques of mind control with their "banner tests" and the music tempo.

8. What does this tell you about the MSM complicity in Bush planning to attack Iran?
"Washington Post — in the 10th paragraph on page A18 — that war with Iran is “a real possibility” this year(2007)"

Buried --on page A18 at the bottom of the article.

Goes right along with an OP I posted this AM --the real revelations are out in the public, but the MSM is doing its job of making sure the disinformation and flood of other information keeps them from being recognized and read by the public.

Here the Washington Post will eventually point back to this article and say they reported it, and don't know why anyone would think that they failed to carry out their duty to report it in a meaningful way for the public.

9. Intentional misdirection to distract from BushCo's litany of failures of in Iraq?
Ahm'mad said it: BushCo could be using the longstanding fear of an impending attack on Iran and "evidence" of Iran's involvement in Iraq simply to distract everyone from Bush**'s failures, including the escalation and its deadly results. Too bad for them, I think the majority of Americans are able to give both situations the attention they deserve.

28. Agreed. At the same time, we mustn't underestimate the neocons' one strength:
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 11:30 AM by magellan
their ability to manipulate the masses into seeing only what they want us to see.

Suspicions that Iran is next have been floating around for over a year. They'll be aware of this. So maybe they've decided to stoke that fear -- use it to their own advantage -- by sending mixed signals and serving a near perfect replay of what they did to get us into Iraq. Suddenly everyone's focused (and divided over) Iran's role and whether they should be next. Voila -- instant distraction. They don't have to attack Iran to benefit from the fear and controversy.

I'm not saying I discount an attack on Iran -- far from it. But I think the alternative view is worth considering. Where the neocons are concerned I trust that nothing is as it seems.

edit: left out a letter in the subject

14. As I've said since 1994...
The GOP does their dirty work in non-election years. That way the public has plenty of time to either forget or at least absorb their propaganda. Then in the election year they do little. For example, among other things, they attempted to privatize Social Security in '05 after the '04 election. Then last year, Congress met for the fewest amount of days ever.

Their plans ran into trouble when they lost Congress. If the GOP still held Congress you could have bet your last dollar that we'd probably already be at war in Iran. But for the Democratic majority, there would be war in Iran. Still may be. One thing's for certain, if they can pull it off with impunity, they will. It all depends how well they can sell the cooked Iran intelligence and if they can credibly pull off a Tonkin Gulf type incident.

17. Bingo!
I don't think it is a given that they will get their new war on. But it won't be because they don't want to - and aren't used to doing what they want - and getting congressional gop to go along with them. I am very glad to see more mixed 'reviews' in the media per these initial attempts to sell the new cooked intel. Also have some hope that the public would recognize that this would mean Iraq x 5.

Great post, Gman.

23. "relish the notion of a direct confrontation"
Spoken like a true chickenhawk.

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.

It's like you ask yourself how much crazier can they get...and the answer is none. None more crazy.

Until you find out that they're thinking about Iran.

This is the problem with putting a profiteer in a position of power. Profiteers don't make money off winning wars; they make money off prolonging them. From Cheney's POV, the more unwinnable wars we're fighting on the more unmanageable fronts, the happier he is. At least that's the only reason I can think of he would still be talking about this.

You gotta figure everyone else who's not one of his zombie minions realizes this is a batshit crazy idea. You gotta hope that, anyway.

The only way to rescue the neocons' delusional portfolio from the ash-heap is to, you know, keep trying until they get it right. It's not the ideology that failed--it was the execution. Whenever I hear shit like this coming from inside the Cheney adminnistration, I'm reminded of Mao's "Great Leap Forward," an ideology-driven political movement that resulted in an entirely man-made famine that killed an estimated 30 million people. We should never underestimate the destructive power of hard-core ideologues. That said, if the oil/gas oligarchy figures out a way to stay in power, we're not leaving Iraq for thirty years, minimum.

And in case you're in the market for more ammo, you may want to visit my journal, http://journals.democraticunderground.com/pat_k">Get Up, Stand Up! (Purpose of Journal: "To promote simple truths and moral positions that guide effective action.")

If they continue to refuse to impeach to defend the Constitution, perhaps they'll do it to advance their political futures. The Biggest problem Members of the Democratic Party face is the perception that they're weak. Every time they refuse to stand and fight the "good fights," win or lose, they confirm the notion that they are cowards.

There is NO better way to challenge the "weak Dem" image than to stand and fight for impeachment. The opportunity to engage Americans from across the political spectrum is unprecedented.

Bender: You've been doing this for almost 30 years; studying the American electorate. And there is probably no greater expert than you. It's just a real pleasure to have you on this program;
. . .

Gans: . . .Traditionally, at least for the last 30 years, {the Democrats} have essentially been very tactical; very programmatic. I don't think either one of those works. I think they have to have an articulation of central American principles and what that means within a progressive Party.
. . .

Bender: This is a moment, clearly -- the people voted for accountability, there's no question about that. And the opportunity to show that the Democratic Party is the Party of the Constitution, I think will be a very popular position across the board, particularly with Independents, and maybe even some Republicans who still love this Constitution.

Gans: The concept of the Constitution and the People's Government is something that can unite the Democratic Party in ways it hasn't been united since the late 1960's. . .

When an official abuses power and violates our common contract (i.e., the Constitution), impeachment is the means by which we enforce the terms by removing the violator and renewing the terms with their successor. Impeachment isn't about justice or even accountability. That is for the courts, not congress. Impeachment is about asserting and defending "the concept of the Constitution and the People's Government" -- it's an endeavor that "can unite the Democratic Party in ways it hasn't been united since the late 1960's."

Perhaps the most heartbreaking of all the rationalizations for refusing to rescue the Constitution are the declarations that impeachment would undermine their chances of victory in '08. That unquestioned assumption is the opposite of reality. Even if impeachment weren't the most effective way to tap into the mother lode of energy and outrage at Bush and define the Democratic Party as the Party of the Constitution and the People's Government, it is NEVER "good politics to be complicit in crime. They need look no further than their failure to fight against the Authorization to Use Military Force. The political price they are paying, and continue to pay, is directly proportional to the magnitude of the resulting horror.

38. Anyone care to join me in Switzerland?
Normally, I'd just stay here but if he manages to kick this off before Blair gets the boot, you just know Blair will back him up. So decamping to a neutral country sounds favourite right now.

would do something to stop him. Any more chance of that happening there than that happening across the pond?

43. Possibly
A vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister is a hell of a lot easier to achieve than impeachment. Standing Order 17 allows any MP who wants to propose a bill to do so, that could easily be turned into a resolution against following Bush to war. SO 34 allows any MP to make a short speech about anything they like so that could be used. The fourth option is that if a Labour party member can gain the backing of X number of Labour MPs (I forget exactly how many), he can force a leadership contest. That's risky because if Blair were to win such a contest, he then can't be challenged again for a certain length of time and PMs tend to see such a victory as vindication.

To be honest, Blair is on such a sticky wicket right now that I doubt he's honestly try it. The feeling over here right now is "OK, if you keep quiet for the remaining seven months or so, we'll let you have a dignified exit and retirement but if you try anything radical, you'll be gone in seconds".

50. If I were Switzerland, and Bush starts bombing, I don't think I'd take any...
Americans in.

If Bush does the ultimate insane thing and goes nukular there will be very few countries on the earth that would willingly allow American emigres in.

They might be willing to take in American political refugees though and even Shrub wouldn't dare declare war on Switzerland, they control the money.

52. Cheney and his minions are a loose cannon....
He needs to go. Now more than ever.

He is DIRECTLY responsible for this war and use of garbage intel and lies to mislead this nation.

Halliburton former CEO Dick Cheney...goes on the war path as VP and HAL stock prices climbs from near junk status in July of 2002 to a respectable $30 today on ever increasing instability in the middle east. He will not stop bringing home the shareholder value for Halliburton.

That is his legacy. That is what America bought into as long as he is in office.

It is time for him to be removed from office.

Bush's 'sour-faced cynic-imitation' of critics of his Iran attack plan posted by bigtree in GD

Talks about bu$h being cynical that anyone would suggest they are planning war with Iran.

62. "Saber-rattling" abroad, posturing for America
Bush denies we will attack iran. Every action and word indicates the opposite and in fact speaks of a pre-determined plan and even schedule that has nothing at all to do with any action or provocation by Iran itself. In fact, the diplomatic channels, the negotiations and progress made have been deliberately trashed since 2000. The barest unbelievable words don't even begin to sugar coat the lies of vague but absolute ultimatums, clear signs of INEVITABLE action.

So the catch for Iran- which cannot win nor instigate a war- is that by the clear lessons(war no matter what) of Iraq is that talking or hunkering down or making concessions or the world community will do nothing. That example is itself the Iraq Bonus. That merely by making the same moves one did before Iraq the target country now must be provoked into doing something to justify THIS time. Catch-22 has arrived in Tehran.

The crux that enables this charade to unfold is the successful posturing here at home. So long as Americans empower the game by accepting the "Iranian problem" argument, Bush's utterly unbelievable denials, the positioning of our forces as a mere show and not an absolute provocative declaration of war in and of themselves, and an albeit weaker "debate" on distractions, on the LAST war, other crimes, policies, this war is inevitable. The real monsters, the real threats are our war-bound leaders moving our people to murder and death- not Iran now and quite possibly, not an Iranian "problem" ever.

America has been reduced by diversion, silence, acceptance of Bush ground rules)still) into the dumbest of couch potato patriots, KNOWING what is going to happen but at ease because of the overwhelming might of our brute force and with zero compassion for our military and its victims alike. Played like idiots by a mass media mind with an IQ designed in hell, deserted by politicians who can busy themselves with sluggish progress on "important" issues concerning messes they did not prevent last time. That is the only quagmire that exists for Bush, one which is necessary and one which he approves. The Iraq quagmire itself offers opportunities and impetus to drive and enable "bold" old plans to screw up the rest of the ME to sponge the last of the oil and hope and rape their future and ours.

Iran, Israel and everyone knows. America is "arguing" and somewhat against "possible" new war. Or shrugs, or is ignorant, or diverted. This spells success for the partially beleaguered, still active and unchecked executive branch. The other creaking limb, the legislative is struggling to blossom while the clock runs out. The only hope otherwise for the world is- get this and laugh bitterly- that the two men who have their fingers on the trigger could be stopped by the Congress and public outcry. That is the only real hope. Somnolent, despairing, bewildered, fearful, attention on ceiling, whistling.

When a gunslinger who has called out a rube and gunned him down and tricked the town all the way into doing nothing calls someone out again with the same leering ruse what will happen? For Iran, the US is supposed to pretend powerlessness, cowardly granting the repetition with the lie of unknowing. The media with blood on its hands leads in cowardice. The Iraq failed Congress follows. The bewildered, leaderless masses, seething with opposition is enslaved to watch and never speak. And like the Westerns where the town has shuttered windows and the masses never rally to stop the gunman, we pretend not to hear, not watch the villain stalking his victim.

High noon with low character. No hero to miraculously win against "odds" that the abdication of the mass made so dangerous. No chance. Turn up the TV and taste the 1000 flavors of Bush death.
