Michael Schiavo (Terri's husband) in the news again
Edited on Sat Oct-06-07 06:38 PM by flashl
Where’s The Media Now?

The Tampa Tribune, ABC Action News, New York Times and scores of other media across the nation touted the exploitation of Terri Schiavo’s name for the new federal PAC which was supposed to raise money to “educate voters on where their elected officials stood when they had a choice between individual freedom and personal privacy and overreaching government action”, as the SP Times blared.

But now that Schiavo’s PAC is under federal inquiry and has been terminated, there’s been nary a word reporting the latest development by the media. In fact, the Florida media as well as the national media, seems to be intentionally avoiding the issue of Michael Schiavo, particularly his latest courtroom controversy involving his credibility and alleged retaliation, as well as alleged extra-marital dalliances. And it all goes to the credibility of his claim that his disabled wife wanted to die so he removed her feeding tube and “kept his promise”. The only thing that appears to be clear and convincing is that Michael Schiavo has no credibility and ulterior motives.

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/news/2007/10/03/accusatory_fingers/

“Michael Schiavo vowed to use donations to pay for television advertisements and “personal appearances … in the states and districts of political leaders who chose their own political gain over personal privacy”, another article said.

Last month, in the wake of a federal inquiry by the Federal Election Commission and a year-long investigation into the committee’s operations by the Florida Election Commission the plug was pulled on TerriPAC.

It seems that memories of Terri lingers.

27. Did I say that you "personally gain"?

Or, downthread, did anyone suggest you had an agenda before you felt the need to blurt out that you don't have an agenda?

I dunno... you might want to Google "protest too much" and see what comes up. :eyes:

24. Most DUers had no sympathy for Terri Schiavo

because her family is Catholic and wanted to care for her and keep her alive until she died of natural causes. Pro-lifers got involved in the case, taking the family's side, and apparently you can't be a pro-life Democrat. You can oppose war and the death penalty but if you also oppose euthanasia and abortion, you're "not a liberal."

I don't guess they realize that pro-lifers also protest the death penalty, hold vigils at executions, protest against the School of the Americas, protest against the war, protest against nuclear weapons, etc.

Disability rights groups were also involved in protesting the starvation/dehydration killing of Terri Schiavo. When some of us who are disabled talked about the case in the Disability Rights forum, people who aren't disabled came in and argued with us. They said she wasn't disabled, she was dead, didn't have a brain, etc. Of course her suspected medical condition of permanent vegetative state could only be established at autopsy so she had to die to be diagnosed, don't you see?

Disabled people get in the way, you know? Some of us need special parking places or ramps or Braille on signs or service dogs, we're in the way. Some of us look different. Some of us don't die when we should. It was all very nasty.

I'm not surprised that Michael Schiavo is in trouble, sorry to hear that the St. Pete Times isn't reporting it. It used to be a very good paper, very liberal. The Tampa Trib has always been right wing. You'd think one of them would be reporting it, given their differing points of view.

26. I disagree
Most DUers realized her brain stem was gone and there was no hope for her to live other than in a vegetative state. There were a few who agreed with her parents and wanted her kept 'alive' but the vast majority sympathized with her husband and understood the science and what it means when a brain stem is gone.

29. It was a very hard case, I agree.
Legally, only her husband had the right to make a decision. There was a lot of evidence to say that he'd done what he could to make her comfortable (all those years and no bed sores--that takes dedicated family to make sure that the patient is moved around enough), and the autopsy says that she really was gone and for a long time.

Still, it would've been so much better if everyone had been able to let the family hash it out and have peace.

59. From what I remember, he wanted to, the parents said no, and that's what got it going.
The hospital didn't want to decide, so it went to court, and that's where it got really nasty with all sorts of allegations flying both ways (mostly against Mr. Schiavo, though).

to determine whether Terri's feeding tube should be removed; Michael took the position that Terri would choose to remove the tube; Terri's parents took position that Terri would choose not to remove the tube.

39. Most Think Terri Schiavo *Did* Die of Natural Causes
And that the feeding tube was an unnatural extension of physical life, where all mental life was gone already.

I was raised Catholic and to me, that seems more consistent with the Church's teachings as I learned them.

who want to use her name for political or financial gain. This is plain stupid. LEave the man in peace. I wonder how many of these people would have come out of the fucking woodwork if the Schiavo family had no insurance and they were going to unplug Terri because they couldn't afford to keep her alive? There have been many cases of people dying from a lack of insurance, where are all these right wing assholes on those? Oh yeah, they are busy bowing to their savior who just vetoed health care for poor kids. :eyes:
