Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canucks!
I'll be going to my married daughter's place tomorrow for the turkey dinner deal. It used to always be at my house but the last couple of years she has taken over. I'm looking forward to it. The weather is perfect here in southern Ontario and it will be a lovely day.....Happy turkey everyone!:toast:

Thats very unusual that Ontario has better weather than BC at this time of year... For once I am envious of you guys! Have a good one.

4. Are you asking if we call Americans Hersheys?....If so I've never heard of it.
Isn't Hershey (besides being a chocolate bar) a city in Pennsylvania?:)

7. Boy, I really feel old now! That's why I asked if we were still called that. When
I used to go to Vancouver a LOT in the mid-60's, there were signs, bumper stickers saying Hershey Go Home. I never understood why they used that term, and my Canadian friends didn't either, but it was definitely directed toward Americans.

So I'll re-phrase: Happy Thanksgiving from your American friends!

14. (LOL!!!) You mean I get to solve a 40-year-old puzzle for you? OK ... easy.

General Lewis B. Hershey was the Director of Selective Service in those days. In fact, he was called "Mr. Selective Service" and was the director through World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. Removed as director in 1970 by Nixon, he retired in 1973, about the same time the draft was "retired." He was the focus of anti-war protests. So, in Canada they'd say "Hershey Go Home" instead of "Yankee Go Home" - as the host of our draft dodgers.

15. Thank you! I can't tell you what a relief it is to know it wasn't a figment
of my imagination!

That's really interesting -- and I didn't even think of looking it up -- so thanks for the continuing education again, TN! :loveya:

Enjoy the weather...LS is right. The weather in BC is horrid right now. It hasn't stopped raining at all today. Anyway, gobble gobble. Enjoy your turkey dinner.

13. Hey, thanks
Doing the turkey thang tomorrow.

Just our little family. All the relatives are scattered throughout Ontario - Parry Sound, Toronto, Owen Sound, Oakville..... Hard to get us all together in the same house.

We represent the eastern branch of the family, I guess.

17. I'm an American temporarily in Canada (for about 4 years)
Alberta --

We just can't get used to Thanksgiving in October. So we hold it when the Americans do, or on the nearest weekend thereabouts. Of course we're often in snow by then. Then the next day we go get our Christmas tree, if the lots are open yet.

We're all excited because we found out Pizza Hut is open on Oct. 8th, and we have a half-off coupon. To us a pizza night is exciting because we're a bit low budget right now.

Towards the end of November I'll go buy all the stuff. They always think I'm a bit strange for obviously buying Thanksgiving food in late November -- I never say I'm Amercican anymore (sadly) because... of... everything talked about here at DU. I pass as a Canuck just about everywhere now... nobody notices. You just do the simple things, like stop for pedestrians in cross-walks, obey the school speed limit signs, give cyclists the right of way, generally be courteous to everyone, and nobody realizes you are an American. A few "ey's" now and then don't hurt either.

19. hey, that means you can have TWO Thanksgivings!
My boss and his wife are US expats, and last year they brought me a turkey dinner when I was covering for him on the US holiday. They looked almost guilty -- wondering if I would disappove of them for celebrating in November -- but I hugged them and said that as far I was concerned, they could celebrate Memorial Day, July 4th, Presidents Day ...

I have decided that if I marry an American, our family will just have two sets of holidays. For sure it would make things easier with the relatives (Canadian Thanksgiving with mine, US Thanksgiving with his!).
