Over 100 Groups Endorse October 27 'End the War Now' Protest in San FranciscoOrganizers of this month's peace protest in San Francisco reported that they received their 100th organizational endorsement last week. The protest, which demands an immediate end to the US occupation of Iraq, will kick off on Saturday, October 27th at 11 am in the Civic Center with a number of nationally known speakers including former Episcopal Bishop of California Marc Andrus, former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and Students for a Democratic Society Co-Founder Tom Hayden. This will be followed by a march to Mission Dolores Park, where a peace convergence is planned.
National and local groups have come together for a large and united protest against the war in Northern California under the banner of "End the War Now". New polls show that over 75 percent of the country is against continuing the occupation of Iraq. This opposition is being reflected in the growing number of groups and individuals endorsing and organizing for October 27. Labor unions, immigrant groups, religious, and community groups are joining this mobilization, many of whom have never participated in a protest before.
The U.S. war in Iraq has resulted in thousands of American dead, tens of thousands of American wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead and millions of Iraqis displaced. Federal spending on the Iraq War has surpassed $450 billion and continues at the rate of $500,000 per minute.
