I Vote NORAH JONES as "Most Admired Singer." (Re: 60 Minutes Interview)
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 12:29 PM by The Cleaner
Did anybody see the 60 Minutes interview with Norah Jones? I was impressed by her poise, her friendliness, and how down to earth she is. She just seemed so humble and kind too - unpretentious and like somebody you'd feel perfectly comfortable talking to if you met her on the street.

We need more entertainers like Norah Jones!

4. Being the daughter of Ravi Shankar
she should have all those qualities...and doesn't disappoint...

5. Watered down cocktail tinkling
As a lightweight pop singer, I guess she's okay. But she's no Betty Carter. Not by a long shot.

7. It's not the genre, it is how well you do what you do. If you want
a superb scat singer, then Betty Carter was the queen. If you want dreamy romantic music, Betty Carter would not be your choice. She could sing torch, but that wasn't why we went to her shows. If you want a laid back friendly evening of music well done, Nora Jones would be a good choice.

Some days I like some Bach, the next day I might want to rip the paint off the walls with some "Hoodoo Zephyr" by John Adams. Some Days I might want "Dropping Things" by Betty Carter, or "Come Away With Me" by Nora Jones. Carter is the superior artist but some days I want a pretty voice singing just for me.

8. -shrug-
Don't get much of a chance to be an annoying jazz snob on DU. For a pretty voice singing just for me, I turn to Diamanda Galas.

9. I agree, but Nora Jones and Betty Carter were being discussed,
so I used them as examples.

6. I was very impressed with her in that interview. That girl could
go country anytime she wants. She seems like a beautiful soul.

10. Also a NYT article
that featured her about a month ago.
Her love is music - not the trappings of celebrity. That makes her rare.
She is a talent too.
