Book: Couric felt pressured by NBC to support war John Byrne
Published: Monday October 8, 2007

According to Reality Show, a book by Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz which hits bookshelves this week, CBS' Katie Couric felt pressured by NBC to 'lighten up' on her coverage of the war.

...........

"Couric felt there was a subtle, insidious pressure to toe the party line, and you bucked that at your peril," he adds. "She wanted to believe that her NBC colleagues were partners in the search for truth, and no longer felt that was the case. She knew that the corporate management viewed her as an out-and-out liberal. When she ran into Jack Welch, the General Electric chairman, he would sometimes say that they had never seen eye to eye politically. If you weren't rah rah rah for the Bush administration, and the war, you were considered unpatriotic, even treasonous.

Despite this, at her new CBS post as anchor she once led with, "With each death, with every passing day, so many of us ask, 'Is there any way out of this nightmare?'"

"The CBS anchor could never quite figure out how Iraq had become Public Enemy No. 1, how the United States had wound up making many of the same mistakes as in Vietnam," Kurtz notes. "She was happy, like most people, when the war initially seemed to be going well. Nobody wanted to see all these young kids getting killed. But the frenzied march to war had been bolstered by a reluctance to question the administration after 9/11."

5. Perhaps Couric should have been an actress instead of an anchor.
She did a pretty convincing job selling the war to America.

Shame on her for that, and shame on NBC and the rest of the self-serving, corporate media that reports news in a manner that is most attractive to their business needs at the moment.

We need a new Fairness Doctrine.

Woodward on pre-war reporting: "I should have been more aggressive. Everyone should have"

http://www.athensnews.com/issue/article.php3?story_id=2...

<snip>

Woodward criticized the decision-making process prior to the war. He said that while President Bush had meetings about how to go to war, there was "not a single meeting about whether to go to war," or about the consequences of doing so.

The media also dropped the ball in the debate leading up to the Iraq war, Woodward said. After he wrote an article for the Washington Post about the absence of "smoking-gun" evidence, he should have pursued the lead "to its logical conclusion," he said.

"If you don't have smoking-gun evidence, you don't have anything really. I didn't pursue that," he said. " You always get caught up, even as a journalist, in the climate of opinion. I should have been more aggressive. Everyone should have."

sorry i have to say this..
fuck you Woodward..
you do not get to clean the blood of our dead soldiers off yourself now..
it's too damn late.

Noooo there is no re-do Woodward..you live and rot with the murders of innocent lives you helped send to their graves!

You filthy pig..you drip with the blood of almost 4000 dead soldiers..and 1 million Iraqi citizens....you have a Place reserved in hell, if there is a hell..i pray.. you will rot for eternity!

You were little lord pissy pants blow job ..bob..you are a traitor to this nation Bob...now live with your shame and disgrace..hopefully you will be hit by a bolt of lightening and have a few seconds to see your life flash before your eyes Bob ..and i hope you see the corpses of what you created and the innocent lives you helped kill and you cheated of life.. and profitted off of.

Tell ya what bob..i am no journalist..nor are millions of Americans who tried to stop this war of lies..you pandered and slobbered all over yourself for this war..and the criminal in this white house and his side kick darth vader....if I and so many moms and dads and soldiers dads and moms and housewives , and regular dads and grandma's and grandpa's and just plain citizens of this once great land knew it was all bullshit and lies..don't you dare call yourself a journalist..you are a liar and a traitor ..that is what you are Bob.. you thought you had to commit treason to this nation to pander to bush and his killers..and war profiteers..and greedy sob's...and you didn't know the truth at that time???..bullshit....unadulterated bullshit!..you are in the wrong business bubba if you think...
" we the people" are going to believe your bullshit now and you want a mia culpa..forget it Woodward..you are stained with the blood of so many dead human beings... for your own greed ..you greedy bastard..rot in hell Woodward..just go rot in hell!

She enjoys being (in her mind) some sort of hard hitting journalist. But public opinion has turned and little ole Katie is singing a different tune now. :eyes:

As was posted upthread, Katie's NEVER gonna be able to wash the blood of thousands or millions of people off her grubby & greedy little hands! :puke:

23. Oh, please. Really.
I can just hear the CBS executives' conversation before they recruited Kurtz to write that article: dismal ratings (at a time when viewers have gotten disgusted with pro-Bush news propaganda), $15million/year being thrown out the window for her salary. What to do? Call a "reporter" who is game for propaganda (for the right price) to get the blatant word out that Couric is an "out-and-out liberal".

Take it from me: I watched Couric on the Today Show from her first day on the air until I could no longer stomach her in the mid-90's. There is no way this woman comes close to being in the middle -- a non-partisan -- much less, a liberal. Her contempt for Democrats was just too obvious; she was unable to control her sneers when she interviewed them, & she consistently tried to damage them by putting them on the spot. She gushed & practically squealed with delight whenever she interviewed the Republicans. She seemed particularly chummy with the Bushes. During a tour of the newly-opened Reagan library, she gushed with approval when Nancy Reagan compared "Ronnie" with Pope Paul.

Further, the Today Show had a series where each of the Today Show regulars prepared a biographical film about themselves & their backgrounds. Couric was shown walking with her elderly dad, commenting that he was a diehard conservative and so was she, as her dad was the biggest influence growing up.

I believe this article was contrived out of a pathetic attempt to roll with the tide in order to salvage a failure.

27. Couric pressured?
I seriously doubt that Couric was pressured. CBS was traditionally the more conservative of the networks when Couric stepped in. Her ratings have been a disaster and my guess is that she is simply trying to appeal to the conservative base to try to salvage those ratings. I don't anticipate her remaining there for very long. She'll probably end up as a correspondent/anchor on 60 Minutes, if she doesn't decide to return to NBC.

were all fucking bought and paid for..how SAD for our country and them.

Can anyone imagine Edward R Murrow "toeing the party line"?

Dan Rather didn't and he got FIRED but, hell..his story isn't OVER yet!

Wonder how many thousands of books will come out after the bushits are no longer the big bad scary terrorists looming in the shadows..on all the reporters who "feared for their jobs"? :scared: :scared: :scared: And made us bloggers on the net sick with their lily-livered cowardice.

I'm actually really shocked that couric is even saying this now because NOW she's toeing viacom and moonves' bottom line. Say Bye Bye, corporatemediawhoresextraordinaire.
