Rivers Set To Burst Banks

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/woalert.php?lang=eng

Flood alerts have been issued to thousands of homeowners because rivers are set to burst their banks after the recent heavy rains and thawing snow.

The Environment Agency says four major rivers in central England are about to overflow. Residents have been advised to move pets and valuables and sandbag their doors to protect their homes. They have even been warned that evacuation may become their only option as fast-flowing rivers threaten large parts of the country. The worst affected areas will be the River Severn between Tewksbury and Gloucester, the Great Ouse between Newport Pagnell and Bedford, and the River Wreake in Leicestershire. A spokesman said: "Flooding of homes and businesses are expected in these areas and people should act now". Gale force winds are also expected to hit the West Country by Thursday.

1. Well, you know, she wasn't all THAT great as a talkshow host. Now she
wants to rob banks?

Bonnie and Clyde -- been there, done that.

This is a serious career plunge for Joan if you ask me.

4. My true response is that weather is superior to us all -- more serious
a response than I posted but not as dire as the post after mine.

What little we can do for New Orleans citizens after Katrina was not done. And not because weather is intrinsically "evil," but because George Bush failed to respond to human needs.

.....more people should know this...PBS American Experience covered it all exceptionally well.

1926
April: The Army Corps of Engineers, having constructed levees stretching from Cairo, Illinois to New Orleans, publicly declares that the levee system along the Mississippi will prevent future floods.

April 29: The torrent has moved south. With the river almost at the levee tops, New Orleans dynamites the Poydras levee, creating a 1500-foot break at an estimated cost of $2 million, to direct the flood waters away from the city and its half million inhabitants. Movie cameras are on hand to record the momentous scene. The New York Times reports that many people refuse to quit the area to be flooded by the levee break. One woman living in a lighthouse "says she won't quit her post unless Uncle Sam comes to take her away."

7. I saw that program on PBS. Yes. It's discouraging and
disheartening.
