I'm sick of hearing Al Gore for president
Its as if there is nothing else to discuss, lets face it people, I love the guy and especially the attention he has brought to the environment, but I still think this is some kind of distraction by others, we already have candidates running for this election and if Al is going to run he should say so before its too late.......otherwise lets drop this piece of distraction and move-on with discussing real issues.

PS
He already stated he is not interested in running, soo....drop it!!

46. Hmm
I half agree.

I really like Gore. But I think that if he does not declare candidacy in the first week of November then people should start doing some research and find the candidate whose views are best represented.

I think some people are holding out for Gore to relieve themselves of the burden of choice. As long as Gore is a possibility people don't have to actually choose a candidate and it allows some of us to sit back and remain inactive. Then we can say "well its too late now and Hillary looks like she is going to win anyhow...."

Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 08:34 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
his early career (hardcore DLC and supporter of the Contras and Reagan's military buildup). I also found him to be wimpy and too far right in the 2000 debates, afraid to differentiate himself from Bush. I'm afraid, too, that he would try to placate the Republicans instead of giving them the hell they deserve, and as with Clinton, this would be tantamount to placing a "kick me" sign on his butt.

The feeling that many DUers have, that Gore is almost some kind of a Messiah figure, is touching, but naive.

Also, while he has publicized the problem of global climate change, he hasn't had the courage to tell people the truth: that fluorescent light bulbs and Priuses won't do the trick, that we need to make serious, even wrenching changes in our lifestyle and change the "American dream" from one of runaway consumerism to one of peaceful cooperation and ingenuity.

88. That's right. Those specific two things you mention were not his fault.
Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 10:12 PM by impeachdubya
Nevertheless, in 2004 he DID take large sums of money from Republicans, he let spoiler-minded Republicans RUN his state campaigns, and he's spent the past 7 years spreading full-of-shit lies about how there is "no difference" between the parties.

If it wasn't for Nader's ego, Bush might NOT have been able to steal the 2000 election. That's a fact. And Al Gore would have made a damn fine president in 2001. He will make a damn fine president in 2009, if he decides to run.

92. Okay, okay, have it your way
Gore came out so strong against Bush in 2000 that voters had no doubt about where he stood on anything and he energized voters so much that nobody was undecided three days before the election...

Oh, wait, that's your version of history.

Whatever kind of president Gore would have been, he ran an overly cautious campaign. I remember each election since 1960, and I've never seen one in which 1/3 of voters were UNDECIDED three days before the election, nor have I seen one in which the Dem basically said "me too" to nearly everything the Republican said.

But if you'd rather cling to your belief in that everything is Nader's fault, go right ahead. (For the record, I did vote for Gore, but only because I was horrified by Bush, not because I had any great love for Gore. I really hated his Tweedledum and Tweedledee act during the debates.)

Edited on Wed Oct-10-07 11:09 AM by spokane
I felt Al Gore in congress was a bit abash than he should have been on that debate, I think people have completely misconstrued my post entirely, my post was a deliberate ploy to see what kind of response I'll get regarding Gore, its amazing to see how my fellow DUers think, I guess thats what makes us diverse.

I do want him to run but I'm a little skeptical (you're thinking why) based on what happened in 2000, IMO he could have fought more with the courts, and by the way whats stopping the Re-pug from bulldozing him again the same way the did in 2000?

Besides Al Gore's running mate has come to be known as your typical ass hole, remember him Joe 'fucking' LIEberman. What a piece of work. Al Gore Al Gore do we think he could have made a change with a weasel by his side.

12. I think these folks are hoping that he will jump in after the Nobel Prize
selection this week. It's a nice thought. It would give Gore a nice opportunity to enter with all the publicity, but my gut tells me he won't. The sorry fact is if he doesn't get into this thing by the end of this month he will miss delegate filing limits. Drafts, unfortunately, don't work anymore. They actually worked better in the days when the "bosses" controlled the conventions and various bosses and others could meet in those awful smoke filled rooms and come up with a compromise candidate. The last draft that worked was in '52. But give 'em a little more time. Gore is a dream candidate for many, but hopefully they won't be going on about Gore jumping in next August!

66. The OP's "argument"?
The central premise appears to be that no discussion of a possible run by Gore should occur on this message board, because he, the OP author, is sick of reading said speculation.

Yet not so tired of said threads that it prevented him from starting one himself about the very issue which, he tells of us, is a distraction as he, himself, provides the OP for another distracting thread. MKJ

22. I can only speak for myself...
...but right now I feel like a tiny dot being whipped around an ocean that
is infected with a "perfect political storm". Lightning and thunder crash all around me,
as 80-foot swells carry me farther out to sea.

I try to find familiar shoreline, to no avail. What I once knew, and the
firm ground on which I used to stand--seems so far away. Maybe it doesn't
exist anymore. I'm not sure.

I'm enduring the storm. I'm riding the waves. And the only way I'm surviving
the storm and being helplessly tossed around---is by holding onto the hope
that Al Gore will run.

He's my life raft right now. He's the hope to which I cling. The other
candidates seem unwilling or unable to stop the storm. The front-runners
act like a storm doesn't exist, and their solutions are about different
ways to ride those waves and endure the chaos---instead of stopping the
waves and the chaos.

So please. Don't ask me to give up my life raft. I'm tired. I'm sick
of one wave after another--piling on me and reminding me that I'm
in dire straights with no end in sight. I want to see the shoreline again.

I need to believe that the skies will clear and that the sun will shine
sometime in the near future. If I can believe that, I can hold on
through this storm.

Of course, I do sincerely hope by then the topic has changed to how much support Gore is getting since he announced his candidacy! Boom!

to have some sort of hope, so let it be. I want revenge for 2000.

I am just as sick of seeing subject headers here pro and con for Hillary or Obama (since those are the two big camps fighting it out here.) Or calls for Kucinich, who has a... very slim chance of victory, let's say.

but I just don't read those threads and I ignore those subject headers.

so, if you say to people like me to "just drop it," I say, okay, shall we talk about how horrible it would be for the democratic party if Hillary were to win? All that baggage, that sickening revolving door for the presidency "royalty." Her annointed-ness as the DLC choice. The repukes drooling hoping she'll win so that they can throw some red meat to the freepers and their "Hitlery" pov?

Wishing for a Gore run makes it possible for me to think of voting for a dem without puking because we both know that Gore would not cross Clinton's run for prez unless there was a grassroots push for the same.

Personally, I've been very outspoken about the fact that I think he's the best person for the job. A large percentage- a majority, it would seem- of DU agrees with me. Personally, I think we are approaching crunch time for Mr. Gore. If he doesn't announce in the next month or so, I'd say it's probably not going to happen. Sooner or later, we'll know one way or another.

Until then, no candidate is automatically entitled to my support, thankyouverymuch- and whether or not people agitating for Gore to run gets your shorts in a bunch, I don't think we're ready to throw in the towel just yet.

Sorry to disappoint.

Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 03:20 PM by hiphopnation23
on the SNL news? I think this thread would be a good one to take up for that segment. It would go, something like this:

You really can't think of anything better to post about than to rail against a group of die-hard Gore supporters who want nothing more than to see his victory in 2000 -- and his dire warnings over the past seven years -- vindicated in '08?

Really?! Really.

Like no one has yet taken responsibility for the Katrina disaster, Congressional Dems continue capitulating to the PNAC vision in the ME, our MSM is severely fucked up, possibly beyond repair, the Federal Government is slowly becoming a top-down, authoritarian, oligarchical theocracy where the poor are routinely given the shaft, free speech and civil liberties suffer daily recessions in the name of national security (any of this sounding familiar?), and all this while the nation's conscripts -- with the help of the outsourced private military -- traipse about the globe instigating illegal wars for an energy source that by liberal estimates might have another hundred years of use left.

REALLY??!?! Really.

Wow, just wow.

RUN, AL, RUN!!

78. Saying he's "not interested in running" is not the same as saying he's "not running."
As another poster upthread noted, Senator Clinton once said that she was "not interested in running." Obviously, people can change their minds, and it's still not too late for Al Gore to change his. Until he publicly and definitively says the words "I am not running," then I will hold out hope. And I will continue to post my support for him here, despite your desires otherwise.

86. I'd pick Hillary over Al Gore in a heartbeat
and I'm the original Al Gore supporter. In 1992 I told people who I would be voting for President eight years in advance.

I still like Al Gore alot, but Hillary is the face of the Democratic Party, and that's precisely the way it should be. She is exactly the right candidate for the left at exactly the right time. Every week that goes by in this campaign proves it more and more.

Right now it is frustrating, and sadly, angering, competing progressives as they realize the mounting inevitability of it. I'd probably feel alot worse about that if so many of their supporters weren't such unreconstructed assholes about it.

But what is going to be fantastic, with NO misgivings whatsoever, is when the inevitability of Hillary's Presidency becomes progressively more apparent to Republicans THROUGHOUT 2008. It will be worse than Bob Dole's sad campaign against Bill in 1996. The real winners of the Republican nomination are going to be the ones who lose that nomination, because the winner of that nomination contest is ultimately going to be the biggest loser.

I don't want to gloat about that. I just want Hillary to turn this country around. And she will.

Keep the PATRIOT Act and the NSA spying. Thanks, but no thanks.

Us lefties just LUVS us some Mark Penn clients--

Three days after 9/11, the government of Saudi Arabia called Burson-Marsteller.

Terrifying Romanian dictator Nicholas Ceausescu? You guessed it -- Burson-Marsteller.

When a military junta overthrew the government of Argentina in 1976, who did the generals call? Burson-Marsteller.

The government of Indonesia, accused of genocide in East Timor? Quick, someone look up the number of Burson-Marsteller.

Now Burson-Marsteller has their newest marquee public relations client -- Blackwater.

You can kind of see why it is a little bit gross that the CEO of Burson-Marsteller is Hillary Clinton's pollster and chief campaign strategist, Mark Penn. You can kind of see why that is a little disgusting.
