On Thursday I attend an event where Al Gore will be the guest...I intend to take a few letters
in the hopes of encouraging him to run for president...personally, I believe deeply that he will do just that...as I was thinking about writing my own plea to him, which I hope I can just hand to him or someone who will give it to him, (not familiar with how this will play out)...I thought that perhaps some of you had something you would like to say to him...I promise I will do everything I can to get the letters to him...this is a fundraiser for Boxer in San Francisco...on the eve of the nobel peace prize announcement...sooooo...if you've got something you would like to say, I will print it out...and combine with others...we're down to the wire here...if you want it printed from your journal, I can do that as well...that way it doesnt look like an chat thread...

He had many very good people in Portland beg him to join the race ..... He will not ....

He doesnt want to run for elective office again ...... doesnt want to put his family through it ....

HE will not run for the office of POTUS ....

3. Oh ..... sorry ..... I didnt realize you wanted me to shut up .....
Now would be the time to excoriate you with various epithets and stuff for failing to account for reality ....

1) The reality of Gore's stated decision

2) The reality of the futility of attempting to stifle opinions in DU ....

But hell: I haven't even had my first coffee yet ....

Know that I feel free to post on any threads whatsoever .....

Now, about that coffee ......

5. Sure, here you go:
Dear Mr. Gore;

I have always believed that a person who serves their conscience serves well. To me you are an exemplary example of that, and I wanted to thank you again for all of your work on the climate crisis and for giving me more tools to use in my own action plan, because time is of the essence. I personally am shocked to see the speed at which the Arctic ice and glaciers worldwide are melting and I do not see it as a good harbinger of things to come for this planet or for us.

My main concern is freshwater resources which in many areas of the world are also falling at an alarming rate, particularly in Asia and Africa. Even Lake Superior right here in the US is now reported to be at its lowest level ever, with other rivers drying up and California facing a huge problem regarding water scarcity with the Colorado River not even running all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. And at this point I do believe that beyond any legislation by this government that in and of itself with all of the bargaining, back door deals, and stonewalling that would go on to take us beyond the point where it needs to be done, that we now must work to get other nations to apply major pressure to this one. I wrote a letter to every candidate on all sides regarding the climate crisis and the urgency of making it a primary part of their discussions and am sending it out this next week. I don't know what good it will do, and actually, I am one who does not believe that being president at this point is the magic bullet, but of course we must try.

However, I believe that ultimately it will be pressure that is applied by other nations, individuals, states, and corporations that will bring the legislative change, but by then, would it be enforced, and would it be enough? We are not going to get 90% reductions in GHGs by 2050 from this government in time regardless of the person sitting in the White House, Mr. Gore, because the glacier melt taking place already tells me we are very close already to a tipping point. Twenty three years from now to not see Arctic ice is way before 2050. I truly then believe it is going to have to happen either by states taking the lead or a catastrophic event that will push it forward. I certainly do not hope for the latter.

That is why I am so grateful to you for now being in a position to work on a global scale to hopefully force action by this government. With you now able to devote all of your time to this crucial endeavor and not be bogged down by the trappings of office you are inspiring others to do as you are doing.

Which is why I am also very happy for you that you are in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize, as it is a prize that carries with it a distinction that goes beyond political title. With it there is so much you could do regarding the environment and this crisis to inspire others to take action, and I am so gratified that you are finally getting recognition for your work whether you win it or not.

I actually predict you will share it with Sheila Watt-Cloutier, who has done remarkable work with the Inuit people and exposing the effects of climate change on their region. With this award you and she would then not only have half the prize to put towards your work, but would have so many options open to you in getting global cooperation, especially in regards to forging a new treaty in Bali this December which I hope you are going to be a part of, because it sure would give me a greater assurance that we would see something concrete done in time, what little there is left.

You are following your heart, and look where it is leading you. I wish you much luck regarding the Nobel Peace Prize. May we see the action we need to see happen regarding preserving our only home within this next year. I sure will do my part.

Thank you.

And just in case you forget, I'll send this on along to Barbara Boxer in mail. Thanks!

6. To All Those Who Think And/Or Hope He Doesn't Run
I hope you enjoy your 4-8 years of Clinton Part II.

I hope you expect that she will take an interest in the problems our World faces from Global Warming.....but don't hold your breaths.

With all of US behind Al Gore now to force change globally your point will be MOOT. So you can stop the guilt tactics because for me this is NOT POLITICAL. Or don't you plan on standing with him otherwise?

10. Your country needs you, Mr. Gore.
PS: To survive, the planet needs you to serve as President of the United States.
