A co-worker of mine recently made a racist statement
The obviously racist part isn't what really shocked me. Tell me what shocks you most about his statement.

BTW, I heard this second hand. I did not hear this guy make this particular statement, but there is alot of racial undertones to the way he talks. I WILL complain the next time I hear anything like this.

"I don't think there is anything wrong with the n-word. I used to work in law enforcement, and we used it all the time."

1. I wish I could say it surprises me,
but it doesn't. Some of the things I've heard out of cops' mouths would make you want to puke.

3. Just flat out ignorant, revealed by the "nothing wrong with" statement
I bet the guy would have taken offense at the term "pig" when he was a cop.

4. I guess depends in what area of the country
locally I have never heard a cop use the n-word...

But there are areas in the country where it is still the 1950s

7. Just because you have never heard them use it
doesn't mean they don't use it. I personally have never heard one use it either.......

9. Police family
I have a closer contact with cops than you do, I am willing to bet

I have also worked side by side with cops as a medic.

And this is not to say that all officers are nice, upstanding people since they are not. Some folks don't belong in law enforcement... period.

And some folks are changed by what they see... and again no longer belong in law enforcement

13. Yes, you are closer to cops than I am
it still doesn't represent all cops. I realize that there are many cops and law enforcement officers that are nice upstanding cops that are not racist in any way. IMO, that shouldn't be the exception, it should be the rule.

I really can only speak from my experiences with racist cops in Texas.

11. I agree.
I live in the deep South. Can't get much deeper than the "Boot". The city cops have been racist at least as long as I have been alive, but I've never heard them use the N word. Yet, from their actions, I'm certain that they use it among their peers.

5. Words are relative symbols. Context is what makes them racist.
Nothing shocks me about the statement, I live in Florida.

10. Maybe the shocking part is that none of his co-workers
called him on his statement. Or, maybe not so shocking.

Given that attitude of law enforcement, it's natural for some to question arrests and the amount of force used in arrests. Especially so when they are arresting children.

12. sadly - recently a customer of mine turned it around....
he said "a n***** cop stopped him for speeding, and he handed him his license and the license for the handgun in his glove compartment. He said that he did "like I should have" and he was written up for the exact speed he was going, no reduction."
Then he looked at me and said in all sincerity and with seething rage: "I should have just shot him."

Even though I live in a (formerly) red state, NC, I am still in total shock over this.

I really have no words.

I plan to invest my time into civil rights. Racisim is a HUGE problem in this country.

15. Having experienced NC (1979-1983), I'm pretty sure the guy would have said
something similar about another policeman who had written him a ticket.
