I'm an enemy troll! It's on DU it must be true! Anonymity breeds contempt.
This is why I don't come here too often anymore. Too many on DU see nothing but black and white. Well, let me tell you what this enemy troll sees. Two days ago I spent an entire day on a live internet conference with some kids stationed over in Iraq. Myself and a friend/co-worker sort of played host as people came by and stopped to talk to the soldiers who had stayed up all night to hang out and chat, and to catch some live music that was being simulcasted to them. Most of the conversations with the troops steered to banal topics like sports and the weather.

As the day wore on hundreds of questions raced through my brain, questions about Rush and his phony soldiers, about Blackwater, about equipment shortages, about the war in general. As my day got long and their night never seemed to end I finally got a few minutes alone with them. Now was my chance to prove that Rush and his ilk were nothing but liars and that most of the troops were there because they had to be, and that the people who were really supporting the troops are the ones who wanted to bring them home. I spoke directly to a girl/woman named Victoria who had ten months left in her tour.

I looked at her tired but grateful eyes, tired of the war but grateful for the chance to experience a little bit of home, and came up with my first question. I asked her... "What do you need, and where do I send it?"...

You see, this was no longer some faceless soldier, some name on a list, or someone else's friend, lover, or child. I was face to face with her and I couldn't stand the thought of using her to gain some political perspective I could use against the neo-cons on DU. I got her address and that of another group of troops from another site(the teleconference had 2 sites here and 2 in Iraq.)

I just finished packing up a couple boxes, nothing much, candy, chocolate, soft toilet paper, a few cans of American made Coke(apparently middle east coke really sucks) and shipped them off. I tell you this not for any kind of satisfaction(knowing my new friends will be tasting a bit of home next week is enough for me) but in hopes that maybe my experience will get some people to lighten up a little. It's easy to call some nameless, faceless, person your enemy, or a troll, or a host of other names. For some strange reason when that person becomes flesh and blood it's a little easier to understand their perspective and their thoughts. I realize that there are certain people on DU who are hopeless and will bash me for this post. Why wouldn't they, I voted for Nader 7 years ago. :eyes: I would hope however, that it's more just part of the cowardly anonymity of the internet than people actually thinking that another liberal albeit one with a different point of view is their mortal enemy. Maybe I'm hoping for too much. Who knows.

2. The anonymity of the internet isn't cowardly just because cowards use it.
And understanding the phenomena surrounding anonymous public forums is a necessary context many fail to grasp.

5. What I fail to grasp is
why certain people can't debate without being civil. I don't really care about or have time to deal with the "phenomena surrounding anonymous public forums", I'll leave that to the psychiatrists.

7. Civil is a relative concept, and unnecessary or even inappropriate to some discussion.
If you want everyone to behave the way you want them to, avoid public forums. You only control your own behavior, so you can only hope to set an example with it and possibly be treated in kind. Anything more is an unfair expectation, whether or not you agree.

8. Civility is inappropriate on a discussion forum? Uh.. ok...
As I said in my OP I don't come here much anymore. People can behave any way they want, it doesn't mean I have to like it. It also doesn't mean I don't have a right to make my opinions known. I'm sorry if you think I should hold no expectations, but at a place where the people are supposed to be liberal free thinking individuals, I really don't expect to be told to act like a lemming, and then to be told I'm the enemy if I don't act like a lemming. On the other hand, it happened, so maybe you are right.

9. I said civility is relative and can be inappropriate to some discussion. Don't change my words.
I also didn't say you shouldn't hold expectations, I said that expecting people to behave the way you want them to is unfair. I'm not attacking you, I'm merely pointing out why it's bothering you.

12. Sorry I'm a little testy today.
I let a few posters get under my skin. And this is the one place I used to hold expectations for but obviously it was more wishful thinking than anything. :toast:

3. We all know that Halliburton is payed handsomely but
a package from home, where ever that home should be, is more welcoming to these young soldiers. And every time you think about them sitting in Iraq it makes your blood boil. And you want to kick the ass, and I mean literally of everyone one the politicians keeping them there. Your heart breaks.

4. I have a question...
How do we directly communicate to our soldiers serving in this war that we are against the war itself, but are 100% FOR getting them what they need to survive until we can bring it to an end?

I've given up on a 'magic wand' solution of total defunding. Ending this one is very regrettably going to take some time. How do we convince the soldiers that we are for both ending it all, AND keeping them alive and healthy until that happens?

6. I think they already know that.. most of them anyway
the soldiers are a typical sample of America, some are for the war and most aren't. Something to think about is while the neo-cons and their shills are busy screaming about how we don't support the troops, it's the troops who feel the effects of neo-con policy's that leave them over burdened, short of equipment, short of leave time and short of money. When Webb's bill to allow the troops a year off before another tour got shot down as being anti-troop you can bet the people it affected know damn well it was nothing of the sort.

17. Great post,
We need to remember that our soldiers are our neighbors, kids, cousins, friends, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and are generally a cross section of America. I'm glad you thought twice about bringing up politics with that young woman. It sounds like she has enough on her plate.

25. Anonymity didn't seem to hurt Samuel Clements
and neither will it you, as long as you don't let it.

I have been here a long time and taken more than my fair share of flaming. Once one becomes very confident in what he or she believes (and you appear to be just that) one can keep coming here and posting those beliefs without fear of the flame. Oh the flames will come, but as time goes on, they cease to singe. When you reach that point, you have survived your true initiation and have arrived.

I say what I truly think here now, and I really feel it's more important to be true to one's political gut than to feed the DU base a watered down political soup. And the fact I do it under a screen name matters not in the least to me, as that long-ago equivalent (the penn name) mattered not in the least to Mark Twain.

Great post. Hope to see more from you, my friend.

Sam

is what I'm looking for. Honest, heated, sometimes raw, sometimes uninformed, discussion. It sends me to look for facts...and boy have I found them here. "It's all good", to quote my grandchildren.

29. If you listen to Pink Floyd backwards it says "troll" repeatedly!
:P

At least I think thats what that avatar thing is...heh...but anyways I am with you. I gathered up a box of stuff for the troops and brought it to the post office, where they collect stuff and ship to the troops in Iraq and Aphganistan. They gave me a list of what they needed/wanted which included deoderant (dont get me started. We should give our troops deoderant!), beef jerky, gum, game and puzzle books, hard candy, etc. My son was with me asking "why cant they just go buy gum?" so I explained that.

The sad part is that (and I live in a 67% for Bush county) my donation bags were the only ones I have EVER seen in those collection boxes! What freakin hypocrites!!!! Its the liberals who support soldiers, just as we always have!

30. Aren't we all?
I know I certainly am. Has anyone here NOT been called a troll at some point? DU might be one of the Internet's few "all trolls all the time" forums.

Either that or only I am a true believer. Everyone else is full of shit. "Trollism" is like eccentricity or having an accent; it's what "other people" have. Fuck them. Liberalism means you have to agree with ME or you're a troll!!!

31. Funny, thanks. I have taken a position on the establishment of a Palestinian nation/state, not
popular here on the DU and have been deleted (even thought I have never used the word Jew but Israelies) by the moderators. It's not about being a Jew or Christian Zionism it's about the Israelies and their attrocities against the Palestinians and our Government's support for their crimes because they are our puppets in the middle east and bomb Syria at Bush/Cheney's bidding. No Palestinian nation/state no peace. Take that away from Al Qaeda and we're back where Osama Bin-Laden began protesting a U.S. military base on Saudi Arabia (holy ground not for infidels).
