Kiefer Chooses Extra Jail Time
Kiefer Sutherland on Tuesday pleaded no contest to the single DUI count stemming from his September arrest, and as such will first serve 18 days behind bars starting Dec. 21 — house arrest with electronic monitoring is not an option (if only because Chloe could disable that with a hairpin) — and then put in another 30 days by July 1. Sutherland could have served less time overall, but instead went for a two-part stint, the first batch coming during 24's holiday hiatus, to avoid a production shutdown. In a statement to the Reporter, 24's producers say, " told us that even if he had to sacrifice more time in custody in order to protect the show and the jobs of those who work with him, he would do so. It is evident he is a man of his word."

Sutherland himself says in a statement, "I'm very disappointed in myself. I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and coworkers."

21. The premise sounds cool...
But it is indeed rife with opportunity for RW fear propaganda.

32. true.
They do however, manage some amount of balancing by having characters who are passionate about the liberties that are being taken with our civil liberties in this so-called "war on terror".

It's escapist entertainment for adrenaline junkies. I like it.

In addition, if you have a good subwoofer, the ambient soundtrack does a lot to heighten the tension through excellent use of the low end. It makes my wife so nervous that she can't watch the show at all.

36. I loves me the subwoofer action!
My dad has a nice Harman Kardon surround sound home theater... he loves the chest rumbling subwoofer deal too:) I'm thinking this is the kind of thing I'd like to watch at his house! When he bought the system, the salesperson gave the obligatory DVD pitch, and Dad asked for action films with explosions:)

I never thought of the possibility of championing civil liberties! That's pretty cool. If it were pure RW propaganda, as several in this thread allege, you'd see none of that, unless the activists were drooling knuckle draggers. I've always found FOX Entertainment to be the polar opposite of FAUX News.

11. Because he chose to do his jail time around his own schedule?
Like all the little people prisoners do? You know, to minimize the disruption of their little, insignificant lives?

Yeah, stand-up guy all right.

A stand-up guy wouldn't drink and drive in the first place.

15. He fucked up
He admits it, apologizes, and is facing the music.

We all fuck up. It's how we react afterward that demonstrates our character.

26. He's facing the music by getting preferential treatment?
Facing the music would be insisting on being treated like everyone else.

There's nothing preferential about it...
he's serving a lot of time... more than most anybody else would under similar circumstances.

19. I like Keifer as an actor
and I used to enjoy "24" before the last season, which was utter garbage.

But it's hard to call him a stand up guy. It's amazing. Millions of dollars certainly can't buy good judgment - that too considering he's had a few DUIs before this. I never figured out how someone with that much money can get a DUI. They have all the money in the world to call a freakin limo...

35. it's an addiction, it isn't under his control
either we believe the disease model of addiction or we don't

i don't care if paris or kiefer go to jail, what i do care about is that a lot of people profit from destroying joe average working guy's life for a DUI

either it's an addiction or it's not

why did we decide to start punishing having a disease in this country?

40. There are a lot of DUers who are big on that...
If you are addicted to nicotine, you are a big fat DUloser... and speaking of big and fat, if you are a food addict, same deal... and here is the perfect example of DU drinklosers...

Doesn't seem very liberal, does it?

42. DUIs entail harsh punishments because they endanger other people's lives
Also, yes the insurance industry likely makes money off drivers that get DUIs but considering driving under the influence is risky behavior that makes perfect sense.

But while alcoholism itself is an addiction, and addictions can be incredibly difficult to break, it's not a disease in the traditional sense. Addictions can be broken with hard work, commitment, therapy, and will power...and perhaps in some cases, medication. Cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and other diseases cannot be cured by kicking a habit.

They feel they can handle it, they can do no wrong. You can't tell them otherwise.

7. It's a complete rightwing fantasy, but pretty darn entertaining.
One doesn't have to agree with the show's politics to enjoy the over the top action and cheesy acting.

Many DUers disagree.

12. graywarrior!
I think I am gonna jump on a plane and come out there and waterboard your butt!

OK, now, follow me....

Slowly, now, for you are very sleepy...

Now is the time to go and retrieve your pistol...

Now bring it back into the Den....

Turn and face the teevee now, graywarrior...

Both hands on the grip...

Bring the gun up to eye-level while striding into your favorite "Jack Bauer Combat Stance"...

You can do it, graywarrior, you can do it...

You know that it is past time for your teevee to die, graywarrior...

You will be doing it a huge favor...

Can you hear it, graywarrior?

Can you?

So do the right thing, graywarrior...

Everyone will be better for it.

Tom

13. I got bored with it after season
two and before I read later it was all frw terrorist wet dreams.

It's ironic because Keifer's dad, Donald Sutherland, is Democratic and hates this fucking bushwar. I thought Keifer was too.

It sure sounds like he's a stand up guy taking responsibility for his DUI whereas we know pukes don't own up to anything.

He definitely sounds like he has some problems - has more than a bit of Jack Bauer in him...
