US Warns Turkey to Stay Out of Iraq
The Associated Press

Tuesday 09 October 2007

Sirnak, Turkey - The United States has urged Turkey to refrain from a cross-border military operation to chase separatist Kurdish rebels who operate from bases in northern Iraq. Meanwhile, the Kurdish regional government's spokesman Jamal Abdullah pleaded with Turkey to show restraint after Tuesday's statement.

"We call upon the Turkish government to exercise self-restraint and not to turn the region into an unstable one," he said. "Such attacks will threaten the stability not only in Iraq but the whole region."

One punitive measure at Turkey's disposal is to close the border with northern Iraq. Iran had done the same to protest detention of an Iranian official, and reopened its border Monday. U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack warned against a unilateral move.

"If they have a problem, they need to work together to resolve it, and I'm not sure that unilateral incursions are the way to go," he said.

Speech by Vice President Cheney via the White House website:

"The United States will not use force in all cases to preempt emerging threats, nor should nations use preemption as a pretext for aggression. Yet in an age where the enemies of civilization openly and actively seek the world’s most destructive technologies, the United States cannot remain idle while dangers gather. We will always proceed deliberately, weighing the consequences of our actions."

:banghead:

...and also, from the same Cheney speech:

"To support preemptive options, we will:

* build better, more integrated intelligence capabilities to provide timely, accurate information on threats, wherever they may emerge;

* coordinate closely with allies to form a common assessment of the most dangerous threats; and

* continue to transform our military forces to ensure our ability to conduct rapid and precise operations to achieve decisive results."

...um...

5. All the Turks need to do, in response, is convince Iceland or somebody to lend them a
troop or two for the incursion, and you've got another coalition of the willing. See? NOT unilateral!

6. Aggh, I hear you. This Administration's foriegn policy is so convoluted,
so Byzantine - with one hand not knowing what the other hand is up to, and the mouth-piece-in-chief on auto replay - regardless of the notorious facts on the ground, that it makes you want to go Aggh.

But I repeat myself.

...look like trial balloons to test how Turkey will respond when Bush divides Iraq into three regions, giving the Kurds autonomy for their region.

There seems to be a lot of brainstorming in the WH on how Junior is going to salvage his rotten, corpse-laden legacy these days.

28. leave the kurds alone
haha..now the US is pleading Turkeynot to engage in preemptive attack against Kurdistan..well it should have set a better example.what happened and is happening in iraq is not exemplary behavior.

anyway..turkey should leave the kurds alone..they have suffered enough. and even if they attack, US is in no position to stop coz the troops are stretched too thin..
