Gore cancels appearance at Boxer fundraiser

Sen. Barbara Boxer's office just contacted us to say former Vice President Al Gore has been called "overseas" for a trip related to his work on global warming and has canceled his scheduled appearance Thursday in San Francisco at a fundraiser for Boxer's re-election effort. So the Boxer fundraiser -- which was to include Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne -- is off until Nov. 9.

Here's a note Boxer sent supporters about the change:

I just got a call from Vice President Al Gore. He told me that he needs to travel abroad tomorrow for an exciting and urgent mission that could result in a major breakthrough in the fight against global warming.

Unfortunately, this means that we must postpone our Thursday, October 11th event with him until Friday, November 9th. I wanted to be sure to e-mail you tonight in case you were planning on attending.

While I am really disappointed that we won't see Al Gore until next month, I am thrilled that he is continuing to provide critical leadership to address one of the most pressing issues of our time. You should know that only the most urgent global warming mission has called him out of the country.

4. Oddsmakers are spinning...
Why would he TRAVEL for the announcement, though? They present the awards in DECEMBER.
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/10/06/europe/EU-GEN-Norway-Nobel-Prizes.php

This year, with world attention fixed on global warming, Toennesson said giving a joint prize to former U.S. Vice President Gore and Canadian Inuit environmental activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier could be an appealing choice for the prize committee.

"It would have to do with climate change, and it would be a prize that included both a man and a woman," he said.

Another possibility would be to give the prize to the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change...Others mentioned include Finnish peace mediator Martti Ahtisaari or activists like Lida Yusupova from Russia, Rebiya Kadeer from China or Vietnamese monk Thich Quang Do.

The peace award is announced in Oslo, while the other prizes — medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and economics — are announced in Stockholm. The prizes, established in the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, were first handed out in 1901.....In Gore's case, his high profile could be the greatest obstacle to winning the peace award, because he already has the world's attention on climate change.

"I have a feeling that climate change is appropriate (for a prize). I also have a feeling that it would not be Al Gore. He does not need it," Dan Smith, a former director of Oslo's peace research institute, said by telephone from London.

Smith said he could imagine the committee in Europe's far north honoring someone like Canada's Watt-Cloutier, because of their own concerns of melting ice and warmer winters.

"Of course," he added, "they often tend to buck the trends."....The Nobel prizes are always presented on the Dec. 10 anniversary of the death of its creator, Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.

7. Winners don't go there for announcement (which is a surprise) ...
only for the awards ceremony, which is not till December.

So this cigar may just be a cigar, in terms of it being some other global warming commitment.

I hope he wins, anyway.

11. How does the Nobel Prize = "major breakthrough in fight against climate change?"

Doesn't add up to me. I don't think it has anything to do w/ the Nobel. It sounds more like a scientific reason he's going there.. "exciting and urgent mission that could result in major breakthrough in fight against global warming".
