Call to return Inconvenient Truth Oscar
Call to return Inconvenient Truth Oscar
12th October 2007, 8:08 WST

A conservative think-tank in New Zealand has written to the president of the America's Academy Awards asking that the Oscar awarded to the director of an Inconvenient Truth be taken back.

Former New Zealand MP Dr Muriel Newman, director of web-based think-tank the New Zealand Centre for Political Research, said she had taken the measure in response to a British High Court ruling Thursday.

She said she emailed Academy president Sid Ganis and executive director Bruce Davis with the request on Friday morning.

"The truth, as inconvenient as it is to Al Gore, is that his so-called documentary contained critical distortions that are quite contrary to the principles of good documentary journalism.

"Good documentaries should be factually correct. Clearly this documentary is not," a statement from Newman said.

2. It takes a lot of chutzpah for a Kiwi to argue against the evidence of global climate change...
...especially considering that in neighboring Australia, they barely even have winter anymore.

4. Sigh. Another pre-emptive strike
A certain segment of the "civilized world" is terrified that Gore is going to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. As a result, those folks are working overtime to muddy the waters before the announcement.

5. So what's not factual?
Does this person want to cough it up? Or does she just want to make stupid accusations because she can?

6. Here's the BBC article about the "nine errors" in the film.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7037671.stm

The judge agreed that the film generally reflected scientific consensus, but picked out nine assertions that he felt were not properly backed up by data. The result is that An Inconvenient Truth can be shown in UK schools, but has to come with a statement pointing out the "controversial" nature of the nine areas cited.

The teacher who brought the case was, of course, backed by some shadowy "businessman" who's allegedly anti global-warming and pro drink-driving; sounds like a fully paid-up member of the UK wing of the Freeper tendency to me.

7. Supposedly somebody discerned "errors" in Gore's film.

One of the "errors" was that there's no "proof" that Global Climate Change is causing the melting of the snows of Kilimanjaro.

Which, actually, is sort of like saying Yes that woman is pregnant but there's no proof she had sex.

Exxon is apparently still out there spreading the payola around.

11. I believe New Zealand is part of the Echelon - UK, Canada, US,
New Zealand, Australia - all these English speaking nations spy on each other for each other. Or used to. Now, dick doesn't take care to have the UK spy on you and me - they once had the UK spy on you and me so that they wouldn't get in trouble with the law. Now they don't care. Why go through another anglo country. But, we might be spying on New Zealnders for New Zealand if NZ has a rule that says the country can't spy on itself.

http://hiwaay.net/~pspoole/echelon.html

or find one on your own.

Interesting - UK, Canada, US, Australia managed to get the right into office in all these countries - don't know about NZ.

spy spy spy - to get you in that database - your grandpa got drunk and punched a guy 100 years ago? it's probably in their db. You're seeing a doctor xxxxx ailment.... your probably in the db.

But of course, they didn't see 9-11 coming (if you still believe it came from outside this country.)

15. Hey Muriel...
...keep yer friggin' nose out of our business, bee-atch!

I think the Academy should find someone to petition the institution that granted her a doctorate to rescind it. I'll bet a little research into her writings would find some errors, omissions or controversial opinions presented as facts -- I'd bet money on it. And so that means she should not be afforded the perks that come with that high degree.

I so wish I had time for this. It would be so much fun to start pushing back on them, the same kind of mischief they are so fond of creating.

16. I support this cause wholeheartedly...
and hope that they also include these miscarriages of justices in Oscar history:

1998: Shakespeare In Love over Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture
1992: Marissa Tomei over Miranda Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave and Joan Plowright for Best Supporting Actress

18. Key words: conservative think-tank
It's an oxymoron, but at least it sheds light on the motive...
