The University of Arizona's student newspaper issued an apology Wednesday, a day after publishing a staff member's cartoon widely perceived as anti-Semitic.
"The comic did not intend to maliciously attack or disrespect the Jewish community," said the apology, written by editor in chief Allison Hornick and carried in the Opinions section.
"We understand the comic was taken with offense; however, it did not set out to offend at any level, and the comic in no way represents the views of the Arizona Daily Wildcat as a newspaper," Hornick added.
The cartoon, drawn by Joseph Topmiller, fueled criticism across campus, including a letter from University President Robert Shelton, who wrote "to express my profound disappointment that the Wildcat would publish what is clearly an anti-Semitic `cartoon."'
Shelton added that freedom of the press "doesn't provide an excuse for poor judgment or discrimination. This `cartoon' does not represent the values or ideals of the University of Arizona community. I ... strongly condemn the prejudice that it represents."
Carried on the Daily Wildcat's comics page, the cartoon depicted a credit card receipt for a restaurant showing a 7 percent tip with the signature "Mark Goldfarb."
Beneath, it read: "Attention all crappy tipping Jews!!! Just because you're `screwing' the server ... does not mean that it's a mitzvah." A mitzvah is a good deed.
