Bad Day Chicago
The Wind is a hawk today snow falling drifts are getting higher and higher. Today we went to the homes of the seniors on the watch list. Let me tell you they smiled from ear to ear to see us. But looking at how some of them are living. Just broke my heart. We had food and heaters for them. One Lady about 80 had no heat at all. Power Company cut her off in Dec. Took her to a senior shelter got her heat turn back on. Brothers and Sisters it open my eyes to their issues. Well got to go eat. Tonight we do the homeless run. I hope you all had a better day then we did.

10. WTF? You can't cut off power here in Wisconsin
Power companies have to wait until April or something like that.

What a messed up country. Half a trillion for killing people and hardly anything for helping them.

11. It's difficult to see it while in the middle of it
it seems at times unreal, or that reality is only seen through a fog, but it is nothing new. It has happened many times before. It is the human way, apparently.

Those that have, want more, and many don't care where it comes from.

This government doesn't care about the american people. Otherwise, there would still be manufacturing jobs here. Otherwise, there would have been a few more minimum wage increases over the past three decades. Otherwise, there would have been a different type of welfare reform that didn't create many thousands of invisible people, in the same manner that the unemployment numbers does.

What they are doing will be seen, but it may take some time.

28. Bingo!
"Those that have, want more, and many don't care where it comes from."

I was just on the "demise of the auto industry" thread and that hits home. No one cares. They just want their cheaper car. If America can't compete, let Toyota win. If it costs too much, let China make it. Forget about the ripple effect throughout our lives and economy...oh wait, the best job you can find pays $7.50 an hour and it's assumed you will live on credit? Darn. :banghead:

15. I don't know where anyone is, but
I pay my power bill to a company in Arizona; over 500 miles away. There is a rusting power plant in my little town that was purchased by this company, and then promptly shut down. I have no idea where my town's power actually comes from anymore, or how far it travels. I do know that it costs a hell of a lot.

I don't think they have any non-turn-off regulations that they have to live by. I always have a date to pay the bill by, and another date a few weeks later which is the date on which they will send someone to shut the power down to my residence.

14. Buildings owned by absentee landlords get their power shut off all the time in big cities.
The tenants get "uppity" and start asking for stuff like heat, water, safe hallways, ..stuff like that..so the landlord just stops paying the bills and pretty soon most of the people end up moving.. If enough move out. the landlord can get rid of the rest of them easily, turn the building "condo" and make a fortune..

Good for you. It's terrible to be homeless anywhere, but in Chicago it must be unbearable. One of the coldest days of my life was spent in that city.

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 10:08 PM by roguevalley
Up here in Alaska, we have had about 4' of snow over a couple of months or so. I don't expect more. You all seem to be having it. I feel greatly for you all. I feel for you and your animals and the people who aren't prepared for this. I hope it ends soon. Take care. I hope it goes off slowly and you don't have flooding. :(
