I am wondering >>>IF
Conventional wisdom is of course that nobody has a prayer of winning the nomination let alone the election without bazilliions in a war-chest, and I think that is (or has been) mostly true, but I wonder if it would really be necessary
should Al decide to give it a shot. I mean, would he actually NEED hugh (sic) piles of cash?....no amount could buy him any more name recognition than he already has, or arguably convert any uncommitted support to him at this point.

But you know what?...here's the thing: If *I* were in his shoes, being Prez is the last damn thing I'd want to be saddled with. Actually I can't even conceive of any sane person really wanting it at this point...and I gotta say that's pretty goddamn depressing to this old Democrat.
:eyes:

there are thousands upon thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) that would stand up and work tirelessly to get the man elected.

that we can look into the near future and ask why would "any sane person really want it at this point" means that it's gotten bad enough that we NEED a leader of this mans abilities.

edited for spelling

5. That's the dilemma, isn't it? I would feel guilty for putting him into that situation!
I am reminded of the final chapter in Asimov's "I-Robot" where the problem "admits to no solution." But we have no Deux-ex-machina that I know of...not even Mr. Gore's internets. :grr:

6. Is Gore opposed to being "put in that position"? Hard to say after these words Thursday...
"we have to reclaim the integrity of our democracy and talk about real things. I want that generation to ask another question. I want them to ask 'How did they find the moral courage to rise and solve these crises' that so many said were impossible to solve?'

That's our challenge- let's get busy and RENEW OUR DEMOCRACY. Thank you! God bless you!"

Sounds like he wouldn't mind, if he knew he had a grass-roots base of supporters who have his back.

I believe he does have that base. The door is open and his to walk through.

2. No kidding. Talk about a thankless gig
Cleaning up after the Bush boy will be a nightmare. Exiting Iraq probably will leave an inevitable bloodbath, raising taxes on ANYONE will set off a firestorm of bullshit, global warming will accelerate to the point where people will be forced to (gasp) sacrifice(!) and China may call us on our debt any time. What fun.

3. Yes, BUT--
if we elected Gore as our next president, we would have help from other countries that isn't exactly forthcoming right now.

Can you imagine their reaction?

4. Accept help from other countries?
What are you, some kind of Commie?
Maybe I'm too cynical, but with our enlightened electorate, that would be political suicide.

7. I want him to run, but only if he really wants it

If his heart isn't in it, he will not be successful.

8. Let's remind him that the next Democratic President will have dictatorial powers.

9. "sane person"...I agree. Presidents should be drafted.
It's kind of like Groucho's line "I wouldn't belong to a club that would accept me as a member."

Desire for the job should be automatic disqualification on grounds of mental instability and overinflated ego.
;-)
