Poll question: Healthcare vs. Money poll

Do you not use healthcare not out of it being cost prohibited but out of a desire to save the money? It really is amazing what you can tough out if you really try.

2. There is now a disincentive to seek help for problems
thanks to ever increasing copays and the threat of higher premiums.

Something like 75% of the people who have gone bankrupt due to healthcare costs have had insurance when they first fell ill. Copays alone have driven some people into bankruptcy.

People have also been forced to jump through multiple hoops with copays at every jump just to see the specialist they needed at the very beginning. That's another disincentive to seek care since that's the time people are least capable of jumping through hoops.

We couldn't design a better system for passively killing people than the for profit insurance companies have done.

3. I hoping to join the ranks of the insured very soon.
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 09:08 PM by Cobalt Violet
My application is being processed. I will use it as I need it when I do have it. I didn't vote in this poll. If I get it soon enough I will. I am very sick and need healthcare; I've already put off care all I can.

6. I have a Health Savings Account
And until I spent 6,000 dollars, I have to pay and pay and pay. Until an emergency occurs I probably won't seek medical care.

8. I have an HSA too, love it. I never used the lower deductible plan because
I didn't want to give the doctor the copay money. I give the insurance company a lot less money and have my HSA money growing tax free.

13. Are You Young and Healthy?
Or rich? We took it because the premium is low and I hate giving the insurance company lots of money. I am "risking" myself. Hope it works for me!

19. Yes, You're Young!
Just don't be foolish and not use the money to go to the dr. for preventive healthcare. You have a long time ahead of you to enjoy life.

9. GOP nonsense - the latest studies show folks get too little care/die early and sick a lot as they
try to save money.

High cost not only keeps the poor from doctors - that is the wise choice that the GOP wants them to make - it also destroys the public health of America and in the process costs all of us economically as sick folks are less productive than healthy one.

There have been so many studies on this - all with the above conclusion when the study is properly designed -

I believe Kaiser in California had one out in the last month that once again proved the disaster that trying to get "wise choices" by high deductibles is.

One gets sick of a Democratic Party so fearful of the insurance companies that they run to anything so as to avoid single payer universal health with Oregon level harshness on what's covered.

It is only by adopting the Oregon approach will we get a handle on health costs.

11. When I didn't have insurance, I never sought care. Now I always do.
I make sure I have regular health screenings and preventive dental care, and when something is wrong I almost always see a doctor.

It's a damn good thing I have insurance too, bc the past year or so I have really needed to use it like never before in my life, for myself and for my daughter. Without it, we would be thousands in debt by now (she broke her leg last spring, I hurt my back over the summer and needed surgery this past week -- add up all those x-rays, doctor fees, ER fees - I have a tendency to need a doctor on the weekends, it sucks - it would not be pretty).

We pay like $300-400/mo. for health and dental for a family of three.

14. I am nearly uninsurable but I have coverage.
Quite frankly if it was not for the unbelievable generosity of my employer I likely would be on SSDI and medicare. The dear man not only employs me but actually tells me often that I earn my keep.

Way too few employers like that. Unfortunately.

15. I have catastrophic health insurance
Which I used about two times in the last ten years. Insurance companies love me, as I am the kind of person that pays and pays and pays and never needs to use it. Now, my medical insurance does not cover teeth, as if they weren't part of my healthy body. I really need a crown on a broken molar that is hurting like hell, and the dentist here in Austin wants about $850 for just the crown. I may need a root canal also, another $700. I cannot afford that, so I'm going to a dentist in Mexico that several friends have recommended. His prices are affordable: $180 for the root canal and $175 for the crown. So, next week I'll go have the dental care I need and can afford out of the country. OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IS BROKEN FOLKS!!!

17. A relative of mine was recently in the hospital for 4 days
due to an ingrown toenail infection that he ignored because he couldn't afford to take off work and didn't have health insurance.
Your insinuation that people abuse the healthcare system with trivial things is a right wing talking point.

18. not insinuating anything

I don't think that people abuse the system by using it. I just wondered how many were like me and don't want to give them any money for anything.
