It's worse than we thought.
"Obama announced that he has tried cocaine in the past. This just in: Obama's approval among Democrats is 99.9 percent."

And the delivery is about as swift as a lava flow.

The "Half Hour News Hour" is where funny goes to die.

I also picked up on the laugh track and forced laughter. There was nothing funny at all about it, it was really forced. Colbert and Stewart use material that practically write themselves.

True the republicans may get hit more than the democrats, but I think that is because they deserve it. I bet this thing will only hit the democrats, and like this thing on Barack, it will be low class humor and dirty politics. Just sad and unfunny to boot.

The live sequence before it may have a few cacklers in the studio, but even then they seemed accompanied by the basic laugh track "burst."

BTW, did you notice the footage of dancing blacks at the start of the BO Mag clip? From their looks, they were Africans or Haitians, not Americans. Gee, I wonder what the comedic point there was?

In the opening pan shot (also stolen from TDS) you see two bleachers apparently filled with motionless people. I suspect that during the jokes they remained motionless.

wasn't big enough for the desired sound.

As someone else said, the laughter starts before the punch-line is even out, a dead givaway.

...it's a laugh track in the "special" segment, and the audience laughter is rather weak when it does occur. And it's decidedly unfunny, only right wingnuts that agree with the agenda they are advancing will watch it, just so they can think they have comedy of "their own" that doesn't involve the true life stories of reps and pages or delay and bribes or bush and wars or...you know, tragic comedies.

Oh dear that is pathetic, from the false laughing by the audience to the timing of the hosts.

Its like some cheap high school production. The jokes also seem to be a bit on the nasty side and it doesn't have anywhere near the brilliance of the daily show.

I think Faux News should learn how to do satire properly.

This is of course just a way for them to Bash Democrats without getting into trouble. This is the sole reason for this show, they are going to get to say things that they know even they wouldnt get away with during a broadcast.

TDS is on Comedy As Jon Stewart himself said to Tucker "the total tool" Carlson, "My lead in show is puppets who make crank calls!"

I also concur about the sledgehammer-like subtlety of the racist vibe in the clip. I was thinking the exact same thing the whole time I was watching that piece of dung. I'm sure it makes Rupert Murdoch and his flying monkeys scared shitless that a (gasp!) person of color might actually have a shot at the White House.

52. The other joke that worked was the Marion Barry endorsement
Of course the whole point was so strident and so transparent that even those two technically funny jokes fell flat. Since they actually did have a studio audience, you have to wonder why they even needed the laugh track. There are two possibilities. Either the audience sensed the same stidency and couldn't muster a good laugh... or the audience was made up of people so conservative that they have no laughter in them.

And neither was the Marion Barry joke, because it was, if nothing else, racially biased. They could have said that he had now been endorsed by bush, and that would have been funnier. (other party - known drug user)

76. Some of it was funny, but they have a very awkward SNL Weekend update delivery...
that totally sucks compared to the real Daily Show.

The whole, 99.9% of Democrats supporting him for cocaine use bit is stupid, the Marion Barry endorsement bit was funny, the nickname in college bit was stupid, BO mag was funny, but some of the bits about Hussein were obviously stupid, "A Life in Politics: My 18-Month Journey" is not funny nor is it accurate. The bit about "Barrack Versus Tiger Woods: Who's More Diverse?" was a bigoted joke. The T-shirt bit was actually pretty funny.

The graphics and studio set-up were direct rip offs of the Daily Show.

The idea of an Obama fan magazine *is* funny because you *know* people would buy it. But the rest of the ideas were just fluff. It's like they came up with the idea "Barack Obama fan magazine" and then turned the writing over to the interns.

from "Variety"

"One seg discusses the timeless popularity on campus of T-shirts bearing the iconic image of Che Guevara. "We spin it into a campus T-shirt salesman who also sells T-shirts of Mao and Hitler," said co-producer Manny Coto."

Get it???? Cuz Che is just like Hitler!!!!!!!

I also read that there's a "skit" with Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter as the Prez and vice prez.
I remember reading that Laura Ingraham was originally the host when they first shot the pilot. Makes you wonder just how much she had to suck to get replaced by these two.

If you are a DUer and a Nielson family DO NOT watch this show. :)
No matter how much of a train wreck it promises to be.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a show on Comedy Central called "The Half-Hour Comedy Hour" and it was just stand-up for half an hour. In the late 80s early 90s maybe?

Another example of the "thinktank" of below average IQs that construct the Faux News. At least they're on par with the majority of their audience.

I just watched the clip. Intentionally or not, they seem to have ignored the difference between "snarky" and "vitriolic." The idea of an Obama fan magazine *could* be really funny, but the execution and the writing were just... terrible. It was like watching a joke being beaten to death with a sledgehammer.

The only funny thing is that Fox News doesn't know why The Daily Show is funny.

I myself didn't figure out why The Daily Show is funny until a few months ago. I've come to realize that when Stewart and Colbert claim to be in the fake news business, they're faking: the method in their madness is that they simply point out how fake the REAL news is.

Last night's TDS is a textbook example: A segment about how CNN turned the contents of Anna Nicole Smith's hotel refrigerator ("Fridge of Death") into an investigation of the contents of the CNN break room's refrigerator, followed by a segment on a group who likes to swim in the northern Atlantic Ocean this time of year without wet suits. The story that's supposed to be "real" news feels fake; the story that sounds like it must be fake is real. THAT'S why we laugh--even when it's the Dems who get skewered.

Fox News seems to think that TDS is popular because it says derogatory things about the opposition. There is no hope for their new show because as quintessential purveyors of fake news, they can't see that they're part of the problem!

130. Actually it's you who wins the Grand Prize!
This quote says it all: "THAT'S why we laugh--even when it's the Dems who get skewered."

To have any kind of sense of humor at all, you first have to be able to laugh at yourself. Republicans wonder why liberals have an iron grip on the arts, well, one reason is greed, when money rules your world there is no time to develop any talents. But the real reason is a lack of self deprecation. :toast:
