Mobility on Iraq border amid talk of incursion

ANKARA – Turkish Daily News

As the government is planning to discuss a motion today authorizing the Turkish military to proceed with an incursion into northern Iraq, Turkey's security forces have intensified operations in areas near the border.

Armed attacks from the northern Iraqi region targeted the Turkish territory on Oct. 12, 2007. These attacks which are in no way acceptable were retaliated against and will continue to be, said a statement posted on the Web site of the General Staff over the weekend.

The statement, however, was ambiguous and did not specify whether retaliation had occurred in response to attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Worker' Party (PKK).

Press reports said air-supported operations were continuing and that the Turkish security forces had destroyed many shelters belonging to the PKK. The reports added that Turkey's operations started after the attacks from northern Iraq targeting the Gendarmerie station in the Yemişli village of the Uludere district, an incident which the General Staff referred to in the statement.
