Army ex-captains want US out of Iraq or a new military draft

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Twelve former US army captains Tuesday urged Washington to either abandon Iraq or dramatically increase its military presence there by reinstating mandatory military service.

The article, published in the Washington Post, also criticized higher-ranking officers for believing they can still hold Iraq together with the force available.

"There is one way we might be able to succeed in Iraq," wrote the ex-captains, all of whom saw service in Iraq between 2003 and 2006.

"To continue an operation of this intensity and duration, we would have to abandon our volunteer military for compulsory service. Short of that, our best option is to leave Iraq immediately.

"A scaled withdrawal will not prevent a civil war, and it will spend more blood and treasure on a losing proposition," they wrote.

The Iraq war "is as undermanned and under-resourced as it was from the start," the authors wrote, stating bluntly that "Iraq is in shambles."

5. I don't blame Captains for NOT speaking out until after they've resigned their Commissions.
The people who can TRULY make a difference on Active Duty are those within The General Officer Ranks. But they don't want to lose that coveted "General" title by showing moral courage and thus risking UCMJ action with the possibility of loss of RANK and RETIREMENT INCOME. The American People would listen if the JCS resigned in protest rather than bomb Iran. But alas, Rummy, et. al., other civilian leaders, have replaced all the General Officers of integrity with sycophantic spring butt ass-kissers for the Unitary Executive.

Nope, these peons by comparison, O-3 vice G-1 through G-4, should not derided for speaking out after their resignations. At least they have the courage to now speak out.

My higher power was looking out for me by making the effective date for release from the IRR (Individual Ready Reserves) ONE MONTH before Bush I began snagging troops from the reserves to complement Desert Storm.

Whew! I was fortunate but feel an obligation to help support our younger generation of company grade officers who are STUCK in the horrid cycle of "stop loss."

6. I may be way off base, maybe they (filthy neo cons) just want to
systematically kill off our armed forces then they can continue with Blackwater, doing their bidding for them.

Prepare to have your backgrounds investigated, your service smeared and attacked, your judgement and motives questioned, and your patriotism besmirched. It is what they do, and the poor dears really can’t help themselves, and as we were told during the Frost affair, if you put yourself out there, you are “fair game.” The Confederate Yankee:
