Soldiers Who Suffered Injuries Are Billed As Much As $3,000 For Not Completing Tours !!!
Soldiers Back From War Fight Different Battle

<snip>

PITTSBURGH -- Soldiers who were paralyzed, suffered brain damage and lost limbs owe the government enlistment bonus money.

They must pay the money back because they didn’t fulfill their tour of duty.

Bob Truska, who was in the Navy, got an honorable discharge for what the Navy calls a personality disorder.

One year later, he got a bill for more than $3,000, part of his $7,000 enlistment bonus.

Bob said, “I didn’t know of anything I had to pay back after I got out of the military.”

The Navy said his honorable discharge “does not exempt him from recoupement of the unearned enlistment bonus, and his personality disorder is not a disability but could interfere with assignment or performance of duty.”

2. Catch-22
You can't serve because you have a personality disorder.
But your personality disorder is not a disability.
Thus you cannot serve, but you have no disability.

YOSSARIAN, WHERE'S THAT GODDAMNED BOAT?!

3. How come they can track this $3K down...
and yet manage to lose billions in Baghdad?

They support the corporate thieves - not the troops.

7. Now If The Shoe Were On The Other Foot - Say With A Dem A Pres......
this would be a big story. Isn't there some way we can get air time on this. You've made a great point - "they can track the $3K but manage to lose billions in Baghdad."

Great bumper sticker material: *Co Supports Corporate Thieves - Not The Troops.

5. I want to wring their petty greedy bureaucratic necks.
Here's the rule: When your stupid war damages a soldier beyond combat usefulness, YOU OWE HIM NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

12. I hate to be the devils advocate
ESPECIALLY as much as I hate the military machine, but I have some problems with this article.

It starts out with such an alarmist line like, "Soldiers who were paralyzed, suffered brain damage and lost limbs owe the government enlistment bonus money", and then talks about a personality disorder (which was probably pre-existing and not combat related).

I would hope if the military was really demanding $3000 from Iraqi war vets who have really suffered the kind of damange that the initial statement describes, that vets would be raging in the streets.

If anyone knows of any other claims to truth to this, please post it. I will take to the streets, too.

16. The article is light on information
'According to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, each month from October 2005 through October of 2006, at least 600 members of the military and as many as 1,100 have owed bonus debts totaling anywhere from $2.5 million dollars each month to $4 million.'

I would like to hear a little more about these 1,100 bonus debts per month.

14. that's an obscene level of twisting the knife
i think this should be plastered as one of those spam e-mails to get people to wake up and smell the cruelty. i can't imagine someone being so politically partisan that they'd agree with the cronies in washington that this is a good thing. just to even argue it would make a RWer look like a shmuck. and that's without even mentioning how much money was just physically *lost*.
