Pope John Paul seen in flames

A fiery figure in flames is being hailed as the latest miracle of Pope John Paul II.
The image is said by many to be that of the late Holy Father with his right hand raised in a blessing.

Did Holy Father appear in flames? It appeared during a commemoration ceremony to mark his death.

Details of the figure in the flames have appeared on the Vatican News Service - a TV station which specialises in religious news broadcasts.

Vatican News Service director father Jarek Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of the late Pope John Paul II, described the event after attending a service at Beskid Zywiecki, close to the Holy Father's birthplace at Wadowice, in southern Poland.

Looks more like Charlton Heston doing his 'Moses parting the Red Sea' bit.

2. Did the flames stay like that?...
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 02:37 PM by SidDithers
if so, then we're talking miraculous stuff.

Or are we talking about a momentary flicker that, once caught on camera, is retroactively interpreted as a shape of a person, 'cause then we're just we're just talking about animal-shapes-in-the-clouds pattern recognition.

Sid

Edit: looks more like Pope Pius to me anyway

3. A message from where he ended up for helping
to cover up the pedophiles for so many years?

Yes. That was uncharitable. I like Catholics and hate their hierarchy.

11. I myself....
prefer the grill cheese Madonna, but if someone made some smores and the marshmallow came out with a burned likeness of the pope-I think that could be a second verification.

9. So its true....
...there is a hell. And it appears to be in good working order!!! :D

I imagine when Jerry appears, they'll need hoses and pumpers and shit, to keep the conflagration from spreading over the whole countryside.

This reminds me of a saying we use to have: "Burn, Baby, Burn!!!!

18. But, but, but.....
what do we have to sell on ebay?

All jokes aside, wouldn't it be a bit ironic for a Pope to come back within the form of flames? Are there flames in heaven or.... wait, what was the alternative again? Not casting aspersions on Pope John... By contrast to the current Pope, he does seem to have been relatively admirable, if not necessarily saint-like. But, flames? Isn't there a disconnect there?

19. So instead of appearing in the sky or some shit
he decides to appear in flames?!?!?! Isn't he kind of sending the wrong message?

You would think he would warn us by appearing as the words "the end is near" on a butterscotch krimpet.

It's not the first time the Church may have staged a "miracle".

24. You left out the interesting detail that the image only showed up in photos.

From your link:

"Polish cameraman Gregorz Lukasik took the photographs on a brand new camera and once he displayed them on his computer and saw the image he immediately contacted Father Cielecki. Lukasik said: ''I had only just bought the camera and I was taking some pictures of the event to commemorate the death of Pope John Paul II. 'I took several pictures and at the time didn't think anything of them."

"It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something.''I showed them to my brother and sister and they, like me, were convinced the flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II. There is a tongue of flame to one side which resembles his right arm raised as if giving a blessing."

''I was so happy with the picture that I showed it to our local bishop, who said that Pope John Paul had made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death.'' Father Cielecki said: ''You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II.''

I still don't think it's a miracle but I can see how the photographer would have been surprised to see the image and, having been at the event, would be predisposed to see the "figure" as John Paul II.

As one of the major Catholic sites said, it's more likely a case of pareidolia

Nice article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia
