Big no-go for first week's DVR ratings
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 07:22 PM by SoCalDem
Perhaps the commercial corporate medis types may be seeing the handwriting on the wall.. People just are "not that into" their beloved "shows" anymore.. Grown ups ARE interested in original programming that Showtime & HBO offer..and even on FX and other networks.

By trying to over-censor (like the airbrushing away of Desperate Housewives' nipples) and the "gee-whizification" of language, they have become so family-friendly, that NO ONE watches them :)..apparently even TIVO won;t watch them :)...

Big no-go for first week's DVR ratings

No new shows get major lifts

By Toni Fitzgerald
Oct 16, 2007

The new season has gotten off to a rather disheartening start for the networks, with ratings down from last year among major demographics and very few new hits to speak of.

The news didn’t get much better with yesterday’s much-anticipated release of seven-day playback digital video recorder viewership for premiere week.

Though already-established hits like ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” and NBC’s “ER” saw sizeable DVR kickups for their premieres, they didn’t make up for all of this year’s losses.

Many shows were still down from last year’s live averages for opening week even with the DVR viewers added in.

And while a couple of new shows also saw their ratings rise 15 percent or more with DVR viewership added in, none got enough of a kick to be labeled hits or even to save a dud like CBS’s “Cane.”

snip...

Among new shows, the most-DVRed programs were also the two most-watched shows in premiere week. ABC’s “Private Practice” and NBC’s “Bionic Woman” saw double-digit bumps among 18-49s and total viewers.

snip....

1. With nipples or without, most new shows are crap
Though given the choice, I guess I'd prefer crap with nipples...

7. Looking forward to a new "mid-season" run of Jericho
Even without nipples.

Other than that and Rescue Me and The Shield, it's a "vast wasteland" indeed. We don't get CNN Headline News anymore, sadly. I kind of enjoyed watching Glenn Beck, just to get pissed off.

13. About rescue Me.. Did you also think this was a WAYYYY weird season?
I had a hard time figuring it all out.. I like the show, but it kind of lost me a bit this time around..

Damages is the one that has us hooked now..

19. Weird and maybe getting a little too... something
I think it might be best if they wrapped it up soon. It's still great viewing, but I think they've just taken things as far as they should go. Tho' it might be nice if something good happened to any of the main characters, sometime. Just once.

29. I've got the DVRing of shows down...so when do I
watch them. I am consistently recording waaaay more hours of TV than I will possibly ever be able to watch...not including my favorite ON DEMAND shows such as Californication.

37. I do the same thing.. Every so often I have a "delete" fest
and erase a bunch.. and my PVR (Dish) holds 100 hours :eyes:

Sometimes I wait until they have an all-day-a-thon, and just record all the episodes at once and then whiz thru them at my leisure :)

and we deliberately wait until 5:30 to start watching Keith, while it's recording. We do a "start over", and then FF thru the commercials while we eat dinner :)

27. No DVR here, and I've pretty much stopped recording on VHS as well.
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 08:08 PM by mcscajun
I just dumped all my premium movie channels and joined Netflix. I've already got a couple of hundred films on there I've never seen, plus lots of TV shows there I need to catch up on. "Frasier" - entire seasons I missed; "24" - I've never seen it; "House, M.D." - I caught one once and was intrigued (now I can catch it from the beginning, in big "doses"!); "Red Dwarf" - just beginning to watch it (Netflix has it on 'Instant Viewing'; I'm watching two-three eps every Saturday night. Fun, fun, fun!)

I gave up broadcast TV some time ago, and bagged HBO finally, because with "The Sopranos" over, and "Rome" gone, and "Big Love" between seasons, there's nothing I can't wait to see when it comes out on DVD, and all those premium movie channels just weren't delivering the movies I want to see.

has got Dexter and (soon) The Tudors. :D

The only thing from HBO I'm missing is "Real Time with Bill Maher" -- and any future comedy specials such as George Carlin's.

34. SHO shows are better...
Though HBO is going to be doing True Blood, which might actually be good.

And House is one of the funniest shows on TV. Okay, I've got a weird sense of humor, but it's far funnier than any sitcom in my opinion.

41. 1/2 hr with no commercials is only a few minutes shorter
than an hour show on network tv, though

Sometimes on the 1/2 hour ones, I record several, and then watch them all at once :) I cannot do that with weeds, because I want to see it N O W !!!

11. Nothing compares to Dexter, Californication, and Weeds, and USA's summer programming
This summer, my wife and I found our new favorite show, Burn Notice on USA. I still like House and NCIS too.

USA summer programming = Burn Notice, Psych, 4400, Monk, and Dead Zone. All good shows IMO.

and Monk & all your faves too ..

Who even needs the "regular channels".. They keep changing the schedules (to confuse the DVRers, no doubt) and once I miss a few, I just write it off...unless I can see it online :)

24. Exactly, who needs them?
With USA shows, I don't really worry much about them getting canceled after I get hooked. If Dead Zone and 4400 are still on the air, Burn Notice will be fine. And look at Monk, winning awards every year!
