Why does Voting Day always have to be on Tuesdays??
What's up with that?

Why not have it scheduled on Saturdays, like other countries supposedly do?

I'm sure there would be a much greater voter turnout from working-class Dems if the day was changed to a weekend day.

There are so many things that need to be changed with our voting process. :eyes:

1. Well, 200+ years ago...
They decided to have the vote in November because the crops were in by then. They had the vote on a Tuesday because it was after the Sabbath and it took some people two days to get to a polling place.

Makes no sense nowadays.

2. Actually, we have some elections on a Thursday, others on a Tuesday.

Local county elections are on a Thursday in August, along with state and federal primaries (except for the Presidential Preference Primary).

6. Keeps a manageable gap
between the stultifying, dead news weekend and Friday dump, any possible occurrence on Monay and the polls. Seems convenient today in the planning of the major news cycle and Stock Market passivity.

9. When I was a kid in HS I came up with a plan to boost turn out
My plan.

Provide receipts as proof of voting.

Hold elections on a Wednesdays.

(There was a study back then that said people hated working on Wednesdays second only to Monday. I didn't think Monday would work because too many people would take a 3 day weekend, so Wednesday it was.)

Make election day a federal holiday with wages paid in full if one provided their receipt as proof they voted.

My class thought it was brilliant, my teacher was less than impressed. :P

19. Sad to see a student smarter than the teacher!
That is a great idea. So many would go vote in order to get the "paid day off". Great idea!!!

10. "Anti-semitism"???
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 10:48 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
To forget about or not know the Jewish sabbath is now "anti-semitism"???

What a knee-jerk load of crap.

All you had to do was say, "Hey, OP, Saturday won't work for Jewish voters -- sabbath and all." Gee, how hard was that? :eyes:

15. Actually, Saturday works for lots of Jewish voters.
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 11:09 AM by Tesha
Secular, Reformed, and probably even Conservative
Jewish voters can still turn out. It just *MAY NOT*
work for the Orthodox and farther.

But I'll take this momentto point out that a fully
mailed-in process such as is now used in Oregon *WORKS
FOR EVERYONE*.

13. No money handled or fires lit. No problem.
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 11:05 AM by TahitiNut
I see nothing seriously inconsistent with an election and observing the Sabbath. Go back to a paper ballot - and take money out of the process. Walk to the polls and gather with other members of the community. Seems to be a good way to celebrate free will and history as a nation ... mindfulness. Hell, the synagogue could be a polling place, afaik.

I find it interesting that no concern would be voiced regarding Seventh Day Adventists or Moslems ... both of whom regard Saturday as the sabbath.

Strange, that. :eyes:
