The world is too dangerous for anything but truth and too small for anything but love.

We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.
-- William E. Gladstone

Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other.
-- Carl Jung

Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.
-- HH the Dalai Lama

Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction.
-- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.
-- Elie Wiesel

We need not think alike to love alike.
-- Francis David

Whoso loves, believes the impossible.
-- Elizabeth Barret Browning

Free love? As if love is anything but free! Man has bought brains, but all the millions in the world have failed to buy love. Man has subdued bodies, but all the power on earth has been unable to subdue love. Man has conquered whole nations, but all his armies could not conquer love. Man has chained and fettered the spirit, but he has been utterly helpless before love. High on a throne, with all the splendor and pomp his gold can command, man is yet poor and desolate, if love passes him by. And if it stays, the poorest hovel is radiant with warmth, with life and color. Thus love has the magic power to make of a beggar a king. Yes, love is free; it can dwell in no other atmosphere.
-- Emma Goldman

Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver.
-- Barbara De Angelis

The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.
-- Allan K. Chalmers

Love must be as much a light as it is a flame.
-- Henry David Thoreau

You know quite well, deep within you, that there is only a single magic, a single power, a single salvation...and that is called loving. Well, then, love your suffering. Do not resist it, do not flee from it. It is your aversion that hurts, nothing else.
-- Hermann Hesse

We are the leaves of one branch, the drops of one sea, the flowers of one garden.
-- Jean Baptiste Henry Lacordaire

If love is the answer, could you rephrase the question?
-- Lily Tomlin

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Do you love me because I'm beautiful,
or am I am beautiful because you love me?
-- Oscar Hammerstein, II

Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
Therefore, we are saved by hope.
Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
Therefore, we are saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.
Therefore, we are saved by love.
No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own;
Therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.
-- Reinhold Niebuhr

Love is a condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.
-- Robert Heinlein

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.
-- Rumi

Love doesn't just sit there like a stone; it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new.
-- Ursula K. LeGuin

The world is too dangerous for anything but truth and too small for anything but love. -- William Sloane Coffin

19. !
SalmonChantedEvening
You may see a stranger
You may see a stranger
Across a crowded room
And somehow you know,
You know even then
That somewhere
You'll see her again and again

SalmonChantedEvening,
Someone may be laughing
You may hear her laughing
Across a crowded room
And night after night,
As strange as it seems
The sound of her laughter
Will sing in your dreams

Who can explain it,
Who can tell you why
Fools give you reasons,
Wise men never try

SalmonChantedEvening,
When you find your true love
When you feel her call you
Across a crowded room
Then fly to her side
And make her your own
Or all through your life
You may dream all alone

Once you have found her,
Never let her go

:loveya:

So much love and light and laughter you have brought DU, SAE. May you always hear the sound of laughter singing in your dreams, strange as it may seem.........

9. "Respectfully but firmly, I disagree.
Love is a great force in private life; it is indeed the greatest of all things: but love in public affairs does not work. It has been tried again and again. And it has always failed. The idea that nations should love one another, or that a man in Portugal should love a man in Peru of whom he has never heard- it is absurd, unreal, dangerous. It leads us into perilous and vague sentimentalism. "Love is what is needed" we chant, and then sit back and the world goes on as before. The fact is that we con only love what we know personally. And we cannot kow much. In public affairs, in the rebuilding of civilisation, something much less dramatic and emotional is needed, namely tolerance. Tolerance as a very dull virtue. It is boring. Unlike love, it has always had a bad press. It is negative. It merely means putting up with people, being able to stand things. No one has ever written an ode to tolerance, or raised a statue to her. Yet this is the quality whill be most needed after the war. This is the sound state of mind which we are looking for. This is the only force which will enable different races and classes and interest to settle down together to the work of reconstruction."

E.M Forester

Forester wrote this in 1941, but I think his thoughts remain valid today. And lest anyone doesn't know, Forester was not only a great British novelist, he was one of the leading lights of liberalism in GB for many, many years. His essay on tolerance goes on. In fact, the essay, included in his long out of print book, "Two Cheers for Democracy", is only one of many gems in that volume.

17. Yes and love supports the "tolerance" you recommend
The quotes describe various forms of a fundamental principle. It is not a transaction or a lever to work on others. Love exists. Tolerance is not possible without being in touch with love within (and beyond) ourselves.

Forester's point is well taken.

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.
-- Rumi

18. Your beautiful post was just what I needed after reading
some of the disheartening news of the day. Love is the hope that keeps us going, the reason to believe it will all somehow be made right. Thanks so much for your labor of love in sharing this with us!

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
-- Martin Luther King, Jr."

I wish he were here with us today. I can only imagine how much farther he would have brought us had he lived.

20. The news is beyond absurd and we are swimming
in insanity.

* is on the tube right now, talking about "that's what I would call 'political breathing space'" and revealing how out of touch he is with reality in Iraq.

MLK is with us in spirit. He works through us, through his love that lives in us.

Like Emma Goldman says, that spirit cannot be killed.

The knives, though, are so sharp that they cut in two dimensions rather than three. There is no distance at all between two opposite sides. Hitler is Stalin is Pinochet is Mao.

28. Love Is Like Oxygen
Love Is Like Oxygen

by Sweet

(Scott/Griffin)
Time on my side
I got it all
I've heard that pride
Always comes before a fall
There's a rumour goin' round the town
That you don't want me around
I can't shake off my city blues
Everyway I turn I lose

Chorus
Love is like oxygen
You get too much you get too high
Not enough and you're gonna die
Love gets you high

Time is no healer
When you're not there
Lonely fever
Sad words in the air
Some things are better left unsaid
I'm gonna spend my days in bed
I'll walk the streets at night
To be hidden by the city lights city lights
