October 17, 2007 -- Liberal talk-show host Randi Rhodes suffered painful facial injuries Sunday night when she slammed to the ground in an murky incident alternately described as a mugging, a fall, a drunken stumble and a right-wing hate attack.



The lawyer for the Air America star confirmed only that Rhodes had been "propelled to the ground" while walking her dog outside her East Side apartment, but offered no other details except that nothing had been stolen.

The hullabaloo began Monday night when Jon Elliott, another network host, reported that the loose-lipped lib, who takes her name from Ozzy Osbourne's late guitarist, Randy Rhoads, had been mugged at 39th Street and Park Avenue, a hop, skip and jump from her apartment.

Gaulin was repeatedly asked whether the word "propelled" meant that Rhodes had been pushed.

An anonymous contributor to Gawker.com said Rhodes fell after drinking 14 Bloody Mary's at a Midtown Irish pub.

NEW YORK - An Air America radio personality apologized Tuesday for saying that a colleague, the liberal talk show host Randi Rhodes, had been the victim of a violent street mugging perpetrated by "the right wing hate machine."

Air America's Jon Elliott announced on his late-night show Monday that Rhodes had been assaulted Sunday while walking her dog in Manhattan near her Park Avenue apartment. He also speculated that the attack was the work of someone trying to silence a liberal voice.

Elliott's account of the incident, however, was contested Tuesday by Rhodes attorney, Robert Gaulin.

Gaulin confirmed that Rhodes was injured after she was floored by someone _ or something _ as she strolled the streets of Manhattan's Murray Hill district around 8 p.m., but wasn't sure herself what sent her tumbling to the pavement.

Serious question. I've always heard that the drunk fall relaxed and don't hurt themselves as much. True? False? I've been falling a lot lately cold sober and I get all kinds of injuries just because I automatically protect my head and face.

5. I dunno. Might be true. But no matter how relaxed you are, there's the

immoveable quality of concrete, curbing, steps and so forth that might serve to cause a bit of damage.

This entire imbroglio could have been avoided had multiple stories not been put forth in the first place. A simple "Miss Rhodes was injured in a fall near her home, she sustained some injuries but is expected to recover without complications" as an opening statement would have worked.

Instead, we get Conspiracy Theory 101 and Advanced Bullshit Suppositions 202, and what made it worse is that some of them were going out over the air.

She's gonna have to speak to clear this up, now.

Air Amercia management handled this VERY badly--the implications of losing control of such a story should have been obvious. A statement such as yours released immediately would have seized control of the story. And they can't figure out why everybody thinks there's some kind of coverup going on?

7. I am not an avid listener of Miss Rhodes' program, but I LIKE her.

Every time I see her doing a talking head bit, she does a great job--she's good on TV too (I especially liked her smackdown of that crazy fundy lady who put her fingers in her ears!).

You have to wonder what the Air America people were thinking. Don't they have someone who serves as their Public Information Officer for these sorts of issues? You'd think they'd learn after all the financial AND talent problems they've had in the past, to assign SOMEONE, ANYONE to honcho this sort of situation on a proactive basis.

They are responsible for this "muddiness." And they need to get up off their asses and FIX it. I suggest a hefty slab of the TRUTH, whatever it might be, to close the gaping wound. If Miss Rhodes has a bad dog who likes to pull at the lead, well, so do I. If she was shitfaced whilst walking the bad dog who likes to pull at the lead, well, so what? I'm not aware that's against the law...

It's just foolish, and it's not helpful to Miss Rhodes, either. She has a 'public persona' that has value, and a bunch of fools running around babbling assorted bullshit about her isn't helpful to preserving that persona, that IS her bread-and-butter.

They can't just "let it blow over." With the doggone internet, these things bob to the surface at the most inconvenient times. They need to CORRECT it, decisively, so there's no ambiguity down the line.

had been attacked. I don't believe he said that with the management's knowledge.

They released the information from Randi's attorney.
