Larry Craig to Lauer: "I've never used the Internet"... oh really?
http://www.examiner.com/blogs/Yeas_and_Nays/2007/10/17/Larry-Craig-tells-Matt-Lauer-Im-not-so-Internet-literate

That explains how he "accidently" ended up in a well-advertised spot for anonymous interludes at the Minneapolis airport. Or his familiarity with hand/foot 'signals' to convey interest in a little toe-tapping good fun. He's "NEVER" used the Internets?

So, if Larry Craig tells a bald-face lie like this one, to Lauer, his wife and millions of viewers alst night, could it be possible that he might be lying about anything else?

Among all of the bathrooms Sen. Larry Craig has visited, none has been on the information superhighway. Or so he says.

In his interview with Matt Lauer that aired on NBC’s “Matt Lauer Reports” on Tuesday night and again this morning on “Today,” Craig says he doesn’t use the Internet.

When Lauer asked Craig whether he knew about the Minneapolis airport bathroom’s reputation as a “hot spot” for gay trysts, Craig said: “Matt, you won’t believe this. But I don’t use the Internet. I don’t have a computer at my desk. I’ve never used the Internet. It’s just not what I do. I e-mail with my BlackBerry. No, I did not know that. I had no reason to know that.”

That’s interesting, in light of the following:

» In an op-ed he wrote this summer on the SCHIP health care program, Craig refers to doing a Google search on the term “mission creep.”

» He’s a member of the Congressional Internet Caucus.

» He co-sponsored a bill designating June 2007 as National Internet Safety Month.

» He was presented with the 2007 Internet Keep Safe Coalition Award.

» On his Web site, he lists as a top accomplishment a Silver Mouse Award given to his site in 2003 and 2006 by the Congressional Management Foundation in 2003 and 2006.

» When he endorsed Mitt Romney for president, he did so on YouTube.

2. Well, first of all that's probably a total lie.
But if he is telling the truth, well, I don't think anyone should be allowed to run for Congress or take a seat there who has no familiarity with the internet. There is no way that a legislator can do a good job governing our modern world without this knowledge.

16. Lauer said HE did not know what "cruising" was
For those who missed the interview (as I did), here is my aprroximation of what took place:

ML: Senator Craig, welcome to NBC.
LC: NBC? what's that? Something gay ??!
ML: Someone said you were cruising...whatever THAT is.
LC: I don't know what it is either. Why are you asking ME?
ML: Well I thought you might know because I sure don't.
LC: (flustered) Why would I know what cruising is?!
ML: (blushing) well.. me neither! I'm a naive virgin.
LC: Me too! I don't even know what the internet is!
ML: Well don't look at me... I don't go near websites. I'm afraid of spiders.
LC: I have never seen another human being naked.
ML: I have never seen MYSELF naked.
LC: I have never BEEN naked.
ML: I'm wearing two sets of clothing right now just to make sure that I am never naked.
LC: Only 2 sets? How risque! I'm wearing 2 sets of clothing plus a wetsuit.
ML: I'm as neutered as a GI Joe doll.
LC: Did you just tap your foot?
ML: Absolutely not. I had the stage manager glue my shoes to the floor before you came out.
LC: What !?! I have not yet "come out" !
ML: But you're sitting right here.
LC: That's not what I meant. In fact, I don't know what I meant by that statement....

4. LOL- From Sen. Craig's own web site, "Internet Security":
http://craig.senate.gov/i_internetsec.cfm

His quote:

“In Idaho and other western states, access to the Internet is becoming increasingly important, especially to families in our most remote areas, by reducing the distance to vital services or even the nearest library from hundreds of miles to only a few clicks."

Another on "cyber-safety":

The Senate recently passed S.Res.205, a measure I cosponsored, declaring June "National Internet Safety Month."

There are dangers and risks involved in accessing the Internet. In many cases just being aware of the risks and knowing how to recognize the dangers helps us avoid online pitfalls. Sadly, many children and teens, and their parents, do not have the information they need to protect themselves or their families. The goal of National Internet Safety Month is to change that, which is why I am a cosponsor of this legislation

...oh yeah, and he's "NEVER" used the Internets!

10. Well, to be fair, Phil Gingrey, champion of the 10 commandments, couldn't
recite the commandments on Colbert's show when Stephen asked him what they were.

Some of these guys just take on positions because they HAVE to, not because they have a true interest in them... and I'm sure as hell NOT defending this puke, just pointing out another useless repiglican...

So, this guy had himself put on the Internet protection board? Where he protects us from what, exactly? Without watching it? Who else does this remind me of who used to be in the House, who wormed his way into a similar watchdog body?

8. Republicans and their callous lying
the interview was a painful experience. But as I watched closely and listened, I sat there in amazement by how Mr. Craig would speak as if he was telling the truth. Remember he never denied the foot tapping or hand signals. He willfully did these things, so he knows what he did and we know what he was doing. But he kept speaking as if all he had to do was say it and we'd believe. and this is conservatism in a nutshell, the Iraq war lies in a nutshell. Just say it and the people will believe it.

9. I believe this is a
media driven subliminal attack against the Internet, not Craig, unless there is a transcript, this paragraph makes no sense to me.

"When Lauer asked Craig whether he knew about the Minneapolis airport bathroom’s reputation as a “hot spot” for gay trysts, Craig said: “Matt, you won’t believe this. But I don’t use the Internet. I don’t have a computer at my desk. I’ve never used the Internet. It’s just not what I do. I e-mail with my BlackBerry. No, I did not know that. I had no reason to know that.”

Lauer never brings up Internet, Craig does twice.

was not really aimed at Craig, it was a back door way for the media to put the Internet in a negative light especially in the moderate to conservative sections of the nation.

14. I would be interrested in knowing ...
how many people arrested in stings like this in THAT bathroom, claim to be a victim of entrapment (or misinterpreted actions). My guess is that it is low.

The police set up a sting in this bathroom, largely because it is a well known place where this activity is said to take place. If the police are in fact entrapping (innocent) people, then I believe that many of the people caught in the sting are innocent, and most likely willing to fight (and win) the charge (instead of pleading guilty to make it go away).

Cheers
Drifter

18. Challenge to our Lazy MSM:
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 01:02 PM by npincus
How about a simple black & white plan-diagram showing the Minneapolis airport layout, with a dashed-line for the path traveled by Sen. Craig. The path begins at the entrance door of the terminal and goes to the infamous Men's room. On the plan is a "star" at the GATE location where Craig's scheduled flight departed.

On the plan, show ALL other available Me's bathrooms along the path between entrance door and departure gate.

This would show whether Craig went out of his way to use this notorious bathroom, which would beg the question "why"? Were there other bathrooms that were on the way to his departure gate that he avoided in order to go to the well-known trysting spot?

My local airports (Newark, JFK) have any number of bathrooms along the terminal corridors. Why would a person who has to catch a fight pick one off of their path-of-travel?

I challenge the media to do the above.

33. Isn't he a member of some "frequent flier" group...
I mean, he must be flying business/first class...don't they have business/first class lounges in Minneapolis Airport. I haven't been there in years, but I am sure they must. I always use a business/first class lounge bathroom if it's available. They tend to be cleaner than the rest. Why didn't he use that bathroom? Has this subject even come up? Or was he flying coach? I guess some flights don't have different class status, but still, you can use the lounges if you are a frequent flier.

25. I used to work for Northwest at MSP, so I can help you with that. (edited for clarity)
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 03:05 PM by Rhythm and Blue
The Lindbergh terminal is shaped roughly like the letter H, though with the top two "sticks" being much longer than the bottom two. The bathroom in question is in the center of the crossbar, and is where the main food courts and toiletry/gift shop locations are. Best-case scenario for him, he came in the G concourse and left in the C, A or B; that would mean he had to walk through that crossbar (F is not commonly used for either IAD or BOI flights, and E is used for other airlines)

The most likely scenario, given what I've observed at NWA, was that he was departing at A or B (he almost would have had to; I think all Northwest MSP-BOI flights are operated by Mesaba or Pinnacle) and coming in at C concourse; those are connected and going to that bathroom would have been 180 degrees out of his way. He could at least claim that he was planning on getting a Whopper (of the Burger King variety), decided he had to take a dump first, and then wanted to pick up his food to go and carry it to his gate. The problem with this is that every single restaurant (to the best of my knowledge) that exists near The Toilet also exists somewhere on that wing, and most are smack-dab between C and A/B concourses.

He would have had to pass at least one, most likely two, and possibly three restrooms on the way from his arrival to the one he used, and a similar number on the way to his gate.
