Huckabee Compares Safe Sex to Domestic Violence
Posted October 17, 2007 | 11:22 AM (EST)

The following piece was produced by Huffington Post's OffTheBus.

Shortly after GOP presidential hopeful Governor Mike Huckabee walked into a house party in Loudon, New Hampshire on Saturday he was asked whether he would commit to helping the UN reach it's goal of 50 billion in AIDS funding by 2015.

Smiling, Huckabee replied he would need to look over the budget, and have to be fiscally responsible. A second questioner followed up, asking for clarification - would Huckabee's religious views get in the way of him supporting the methods of prevention that such money would support?

Huckabee, in a lengthy answer, replied that encouraging safe sex was similar to encouraging people to not "drive as drunk" or telling domestic abusers to not hit "as hard":

"If we really are serious about stopping a problem, whether it's drunk drinking...we don't say "Don't drive 'as drunk'?" ...This is an illogical thing that we apply to that one area that we don't apply to any other area. And I'm open-minded to all the arguments, if someone can convince me a little reckless behavior is OK. Maybe that's the message. But it would seem to me that if we're consistent in saying reckless behavior is undesirable we should ask people to move their behavior to the standard and not move the standard to the behavior...We don't say that a little domestic violence is OK, just cut it down a little, just don't hit quite as hard. We say it's wrong."

10. My thoughts exactly.
His statement is a big red flag, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets prostitutes, or at the very least, has a kinky sex fetish too weird for the average American.

12. Faux religious doctrinaires
are all about .."Do I saa-ay..not as I dooooo". And they say it because there's a political niche out there that they're cashing in on.

And the poor people who need to latch on to something other than reality..eat that shite up. stephen baldwin comes to mind.

11. As a Southern Baptist, Huck should know all about domestic violence. By that I mean,
the states with the highest percentages of declared S.Baptists also have the highest rates of domestic violence. I researched this a couple of years ago and wrote a lengthy letter to a local pastor, Rev. Ronnie Floyd, who was leading the campaign for a 'marriage protection' amendment to the Arkansas constitution. I sent a copy of the letter along with another to my then governor, Mike Huckabee.

13. What the hell is wrong with him?
That's one of the most socially and scientifically ignorant arguments I've ever heard.

:dunce:

:grr:

What a moron.

Have any victims' advocates told him what an idiot he is yet, by the way?

14. Well, I guess that's one way of looking at it, Huck...
Or you could at what works and what doesn't and the purely abstinence-only method that religious conservatives like you favor is a huge failure while programs from countries like Brazil who decided to base their programs in reality are huge successes.

18. So wrong in many ways -
here's the one that struck me - he says,

"we don't say "Don't drive 'as drunk'... This is an illogical thing ... And I'm open-minded to all the arguments, ( :sarcasm: ) if someone can convince me a little reckless behavior is OK."

But we DO essentially say "don't drive as drunk" -- for example, two glasses of wine with dinner will put just about no-one over the limit to be legally impaired. (Those two glasses should give most people a .04 level at most.) Is Huckabee advocating "zero tolerance" for alcohol on the road? The restaurant industry might have something to say about that. They may have to bundle a lot of checks for Hillary, if Huckabee gets the nom!

20. How many children does Huckabee have? And how often does he have sex with his wife?
It's fair game now.

"Mister Huckabee, when did you stop domestically abusing your sperm?"

22. But sex is not the problem.
Telling people not to have sex at all is an unreasonable demand to make. I think that data has consistently shown that abstinence-only policies are total failures in either preventing unwanted pregnancies or preventing the transmission of STDs. What has been shown to work, however, is education and increased access to contraception.

I guess leave it to right-wing ideologues like Huckabee to think that sex is the problem.
