Migrants caught crossing border on unguarded Quebec-Vermont roads
Last Updated: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 7:58 AM ET
CBC News
More than 40 migrants from Colombia and Venezuela have been arrested in the past week for illegally crossing into Canada on unguarded roads on the Quebec-Vermont border, Canadian border officials and RCMP said.

Most of the migrants, who were detained in the town of Stanstead in Quebec's Eastern Townships, have been released and are now applying for refugee status in Canada.

Four of those arrested have been charged under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, two of them with helping people enter Canada illegally, Dominique McNeely, a spokeswoman with the Canadian Border Services Agency, said Tuesday.

Lawyer Claire Desgens, a Sherbrooke lawyer who represents one of the people charged, said her client was not involved in organized smuggling. Instead, the Boston man was driving his cousin across the border.

6. I appreciate the article you've posted.
As to your personal views, I have no idea what they are.

Must be careful with this touchy subject here on DU though.
There is a group of Duers that enjoy the sport of flame-baiting when it comes to immigration.
Just a heads up.

I do find this interesting though, since we have witnessed much controversy in the USA.
Seems each side of the issue has valid points of view. Its about opening some people's minds & that somewhere in the middle lies the solution.

tks

10. I actually posted it because
I thought it was interesting that immigrants are trying to get out of the U.S, because the border is amazingly easy to cross without checking in with customs, and mostly because I live here in Orleans County.

5. LOL no shit... what a mess
Wonder what Canadian law says about services for illegals and if they have a safety net for their own in place.

Canada is a pretty cool place. BC is the best. I wish them the best with this issue. May wiser heads prevail than we've witnessed here in the USA.

Its getting hard to find a wiser head in DC about any subject anymore.

7. Well Said
I don't know what the Canadians will do with them, but I strongly suggest that it will be something that makes sense to most people...

8. "Most of those arrested have no legal status in the U.S..."
So, would it be correct to assume that Canada has better security than the US? I would be interested in what the cost has been to accomplish this. Maybe Bush could outsource our border security to a Canadian company?

Not migrant/immigrant bashing (good for them), just pointing out how easy it is to come across our borders and roam around the country. I have to wonder how many al-qaeda operatives are doing the same.

13. Easy to come across US borders too..Makes me
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 04:04 PM by Blaze Diem
wonder why all the Bush talk of the terrorist boogymen, super security of flights in the US, spying on Us citizens and all the while the borders remain porous & slow to secure despite all the frenzy.

Does anyone ever doubt the entire terrorist theory?
A useful tool for a fascist regime in controlling the population of its country?

Maybe its just me.
As a US citizen could I walk across the Canadian border and ask for refuge from my governments policies?
Would I be accepted or sent beck to the US?
