Our concierge has yet to meet an American who voted for Bush.
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 12:27 PM by Pacifist Patriot
It's been interesting when the international political scene comes up in conversation actually. The second day I was here in London my concierge asked me what I thought of my president. I responded bluntly, "He isn't my president, that war criminal was appointed to his post and therefore is in his position illegally and is a dangerous narcisstic anti-social imbecile." I thought Albert was going to fall out of his seat laughing. He said, "I've yet to meet an American who will admit he voted for Bush, but by God you are the most forthright....I agree with you by the way."

At a souvenir shop at Buckingham Palace today I was near two Americans glancing through the official tour guide to the Royal Mews. They came across a picture of George and Laura with the Queen and absolutely blanched. I heard one say to the other, "for God's sake I can't even get away from pictures of that asshole over here."

At the changing of the guard I heard an American behind me whisper to his traveling companions, "If President Fuckhead had his way, we'd be seeing this kind of pomp and circumstances in Washington."

Last night at a pub I overheard two American businessmen talking about how they try to pass as Canadian so people won't assume they support Bush.

This is just crazy! What a weird perspective.

You can bet I'd pretend not to be american. It's embarrassing to be a representative of a global despotic empire.

Murderous cowards who when things got uncomortable all hid their allegience to Bushler, almost all of them.

Click on the siglink below to check out two decades of solid sicentific research (condensed for layman to read, though) which comes as close to proving that assertion as is possible where things like psychology and sociology are concerned.

11. When you put European travel into the equation, I think you tend to find ......
..... more liberals who do it. I know I never seem to run into American right wingers in Europe. This goes back to the later days of the Reagan era, too ...... not just recently.

17. You're entirely correct...
Liberals and Progressives like to see and experience new cultures, sights, etc. They travel when they can.

Conservatives want everything to stay exactly the same. They don't stray far from football games, fast food chains, and Wal-mart.

Many people voted for Bush. Few will still admit it.

I will never believe as many people voted for him as the computers reported, but surely someone voted for the twit.

8. I travel to Europe with some regularity and have many friends there.
NONE of them have kind words for Il Dunce.

When I bump into Americans there, I never find one of them who has any respect for Dim Son.

I know a Canadian who thinks he's okay, however.

16. I've never felt the need to pose as a Canadian
What's wrong with being an anti-Bush American? If you're really nervous (and I don't think there's any need to be) where a button that says "Bush" with the name crossed out as on a traffic sign.

I've made two trips to the UK in the past two years, and everyone has been polite and friendly. I came down to breakfast at a B&B in Exeter, and the owner was talking to a couple from New Zealand, all of them expressing their disgust with the U.S. government. They stopped short when they saw me walk in, but I just smiled and said, "Go right ahead. I agree with everything you're saying."

I've been traveling to Japan for thirty years, and it was only in 2004 that nearly every person I had a substantive discussion with asked whom I supported for president. When I said, "Kerry" they invariably nodded and smiled.

20. Agreed--the last thing we should be doing is allowing the rest of the world to think that
W represents America. Most of them have a higher opinion of us than they do W.

And as for posing as Canadian, it isn't nearly as easy as we like to think. Most Canadians do have an accent that isn't as easily mimiced as we think (i used to live near the border in Montana).

21. It is totally OK to be an Anti-Bush American overseas...
It's better than trying to pass as a Canadian (not easy with my persistent ExOkie accent). As a matter of fact I believe that most people around the world see being Anti-Bush as a sign of intelligence.

There are a lot of subtle differences, not only in pronunciation but also in vocabulary and phrasing.

We used to take a lot of trips into Canada when I was a kid, and even then I was tuned into language well enough to notice that, for example, Canadian schools didn't have "first grade, second grade, third grade..." but "grade one, grade two, grade three..."

Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 01:01 PM by blondeatlast
"I don't like you Americans, I don't like your George Bush." Well, I refuse to be ashamed of where I'm from, so Mr. B@L and I told her that we didn't care for him either and certainly didn't vote for him and we we apologized for the mess in Iraq.

She continued to be very nasty and another agent took over for her. This smart woman said that she doubted anyone interested in traveling would be someone who would vote for George Bush and after that we had quite a fascinating conversation about the effect of W on the rest of the world.

Be polite--but never, ever be ashamed of your country. Europeans and Asians (Mr. B@L travels to Asia for bisiness often)recognize, by and large, that the election was stolen--far better than most Americans (of course, they have the benefit of a free and tough press, which we are denied).
