Sides Fight For and Against Possible School Book Ban
Sides Fight For and Against Possible School Book Ban

CHARLESTON -- On Wednesday evening, students from two Kanawha County schools silently protested before the Kanwha County Board of Education meeting.

Inside the meeting, there was no resolution after both sides squared off for hours in front of the board.

While the board has yet to make a decision whether to ban certain books from school reading lists, community members did their best to sway the board in their direction.

"If we show as students that we firmly believe that these books should be within our education then no one should be able to take that away from us," said Mackenzie Hatfield, a student at George Washington High.

Students, parents and community members used their voices to address the board on the books' controversy.

Many opposed to students reading Pat Conroy's "Beach Music" and "The Prince of Tides" requested the board implement stronger curriculum policies.
