MSNBC: "Democrats suffered a MAJOR DEFEAT today on SCHIP."
No, the children of America suffered a major defeat.

Now, the Dems will re-work the bill to try to make Bush sign it. Yeah. That always works out well for us.

Don't you love the way the "liberal media" helps the GOP frame their debates?

:banghead:

4. Yup
Even with 44 republicans voting for it, it is a Democratic Defeat.

6. Know what you're saying, but there's some truth there.
Pukes keep trying, Dems give up. (So theirs are setbacks and ours are defeats.)

3. I don't have a problem with that caption
it reminds the electorate that we need MORE DEMS elected in 2008 because there are TOO MANY REPUBLICANS preventing passage of critical legislature. Personally, they've f*cked themselves for 2008 with this one.

7. Defeat for children everywhere.
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 04:22 PM by dubyadubya3
There's plenty of American money to kill Iraqi children, but no American money to care for sick American children. What's wrong with this picture? :argh:

8. what was the final vote for overriding?
Yes, that is how the corporate media will frame it--a Democratic Defeat even though most dems voted to override and we didn't get enough Republicans to do so.

9. Question about SCHIP
Sorry for hijacking the thread but... Would this program have duplicated services provided in some states? For instance, we have a program called All Kids which offers really affordable insurance on a sliding scale depending on income. I think the scale is very reasonable (http://www.allkids.com/income.html). Would SCHIP have made these programs obsolete?

11. Isn't "State" what the "S" stands for?
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 04:42 PM by Atman
We have such a program in CT. But I believe a large portion of the funding comes from the Fed, which is what they've been fighting over.

The states cannot, according to this bill, simply give coverage to people with $80,000 incomes, contrary to the popular Republican meme. States must actually apply for coverage, siting the circumstances which would require coverage for higher-income children. As I understand it, almost no one has been approved for such extended coverage. It's a red herring, and it's red meat for the Republicans (and their mouthpieces).

12. Here in PA every kid can have CHIP
The more you earn though as a family, the more you pay for it. If you're within the federal guidelines I think it's completely free with total coverage including presecription drugs and everything. If you make more then there is a sliding scale up for how much you pay.

26. That income factor was another question I had
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 06:02 PM by djohnson
People complain that those with $80k incomes might get coverage, but according to our All Kids sliding scale, they would have to pay $70 per month per child. People who make more, like $200+k can get it too, but they'd have to pay $300/month per child (not sure why they would, unless they're self employed maybe).

19. S-CHIP means STATE Children's Health Insurance Program
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 05:20 PM by karynnj
Each state implements it differently and often gives it a different name. Your allkids might be an S-CHIP program, partially funded by this S-CHIP. Here's an Illinois link that explains what you have - http://wwwc.illinois.gov/PressReleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=1&RecNum=5999

20. If I'm not mistaken- your All Kids program IS SCHIP- just as
our "Healthy Kids"- is here in NH.

My kids have been a part of this program for several years. My youngest is still on it- or was- not sure what the future holds for us.

I cannot afford any other insurance. I have no insurance and cannot get any- am not eligible for Medicare, and do not want to have to go back to medicaid :(

No matter how hard you swim the tide keeps dragging ya back out.

14. What exactly did the Democrats lose?
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 04:52 PM by DearAbby
What better way to take defeat than having "tried to make sure all needy children have healthcare?"

Imagine being the other party, that won, "keeping healthcare away from needy children" Just exactly what did the GOP and * win in this situation? Remember the Majority of the country approves of S-chips...what exactly did the GOP and * win?

edit to clearify it a litte.

We'll bend over, lube up, and offer our backsides to Bush for a "compromise." Which they will then declare as another major defeat over the hapless Dems.

17. There should be NO COMPROMISE
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 05:07 PM by DearAbby
when it comes to the health of our citizens, we all should be concerned. A healthy society is a productive one. For the strength of our country we should demand all have access to healthcare. If not all, at least the children.

The GOP and * again, place their values elsewhere. The GOP lost with this. This if nothing less, a very hollow victory.

But Corporate Media is doing the Bush trick, saying Democrats and Defeat so closely, like * saying Saddam and AQ, Saddam and Osama. Good portion of Americans believed there was a tie between them. People going on rustling, doing everyday stuff, in their homes, hear DEMOCRATS.....blah blah..DEFEATED..blah blah.

edit: same reason above

27. That "headline" hurts the GOP with voters, believe me.
This really puts Bush's agenda and his crony loyalists in Congress in the spotlight and helps even the most uninformed Americans see that they need to elect MORE Democrats to Congress, not less.

I see this differently. And it was brilliant of Pelosi to bring this back up again and make the GOP vote against it still a second time. They all must face the voters in 2008. Every member of the House.
