Iraq Moratorium - Friday, October 19, 2007
http://www.iraqmoratorium.org/

Every third Friday, people are encouraged to break from their normal routines and participate in the Iraq Moratorium. The purpose of the moratorium is to bring new attention to the immediate need to end the war and occupation of Iraq.

Your ideas for action can be as small or large as you want. Last month saw the first action day for the Iraq Moratorium and it included thousands of individual and group actions! Here are some ideas for actions:

* wear a black armband and explain to people why you are wearing it
* hold a vigil during rush hour traffic
* use sidewalk chalk to spread a message of peace on sidewalks
* set up an Arlington display
* encourage your co-workers, friends, and family to sign letters to your Congressional Representatives showing their support for ending the war
* wear a t-shirt with the number of casualties on it (3829).
* walk out of work
* do not buy gas
* do not buy anything!
* hold a sit-in in your Senator's office

ENDING THE WAR IS UP TO YOU!

1. All well and fine, except for two items:

1) As has been explained here on DU many, MANY times, not buying gasoline for one day is utterly pointless.

2) "Don't buy anything?" Can you explain how the people who own stores are going to stop the war in response to that tactic? Besides, just like gasoline, if you don't buy it today, you'll just buy it tomorrow.

Two utterly zero-sum ideas. Best to put your energy into one of the other activities.

On edit: THREE dumb ideas, actually: "Walk out of work?" How the hell is THAT going to help stop the war?

2. There is a lot more to it than not buying gas
Did you read it?

I wear orange and a black armband. And we schedule an extra rally against the war on 3rd Fridays. We also send out emails asking everyone to call Congress. And I send money to my activist friends in DC on 3rd Friday.

One of my friends goes to gas stations and hands out fliers that detail the cost of war. $720 million a day.

It isn't practical for me to take off work and I would rather be out and about anyway, spreading the word about ending the war.

So there are a lot of things you can do tomorrow to help end the war. Not buying gas is not very effective anyway. The point is to DO SOMETHING.

5. I DID day there were some GOOD ideas there, which people SHOULD do; I was just
encouraging people to do the things that might actually accomplish something, rather than waste their time on the three bad ideas.

Yes, I DID read the whole thing, but you didn't read my whole message, did you?

And hey, by replying, I'm kicking the thread...and that is a good thing, yes?

3. Okay, let's go through this:
Okay except for these three:

* walk out of work
* do not buy gas
* do not buy anything!

1. General strikes do not work on such a small level. All that will happen is you will lose a sick day.
2. Not buying gas does not change anything. This has been repeatedly debunked.
3. Not buying anything at all doesn't work for much the same reasons.
