35 Terrific Reasons Why You Should Have a Good Day & an Early Happy Weekend.
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 05:56 PM by David Zephyr
The year was 2002 and the Democrats had just been creamed in the mid-term elections. George W. Bush was reigning as a king with a rubber stamp Congress and a rubber stamp Supreme Court ready to kiss his ass with lipstick if he requested it. Things were really looking shitty. Real shitty. It was the low tide of my near 40 years of activism.

As you approach this weekend, here's something that all my fellow progressives can feel good about near the end of 2007 even with Bush's war raging in Iraq and all the other social/economic/cultural/environmental horrors that our wicked president has caused. A high tide is coming back that is, perhaps slowly, but surely sweeping the bastards away. And here's just a few of the changes in the last seven years:

1.) President George W. Bush has the lowest national approval in American history: 24%
2.) Nearly 8 out of 10 Americans are now with us against the Iraqi War.
3.) Vice President Dick Cheney is despised by 9 out of 10 Americans and his "word" means nothing.
4.) Karl Rove left the White House in disgrace.
5.) The V.P.'s Chief of Staff, Scooter Libby, is now a convicted felon and a disgraced man.
6.) Alberto Gonzales resigned as Attorney General and has hired a criminal defense attorney.
7.) Halliburton is on the run...literally leaving the U.S. taking even the C.E.O. with them.
8.) Enron, a Republican Party underwriter, collapsed with it management in prison or now dead.
9.) The Democrats now control the House of Representatives.
10.) The Democrats now control the U.S. Senate.
11.) The Democrats must approve any of George W. Bush's high appointments.
12.) G.O.P. Senator David Vitter, an exposed adulterer who uses prostitutes, hangs on to his political life by a thread.
13.) G.O.P. Senator Larry Craig, exposed as an adulterer and frequenter of restrooms for anonymous gay sex.
14.) G.O.P. Congressman and Bush loyalist, Duke Cunningham is in a federal prison.
15.) G.O.P. Senator Ted Stevens is going down in a federal corruption probe.
16.) G.O.P. Congressmen Doolittle and Lewis and Miller are all being scrutinized by the FBI for criminal behavior.
17.) There is finally an Air America.
18.) There's a very brave fellow on cable television named Keith Olbermann with high ratings.
19.) There is a Jon Stewart.
20.) There is a Steve Colbert.
21.) Bill Maher is back on television and better than ever before.
22.) The Democrats are raising more money than the Republicans. A lot more money.
23.) The GOP field of candidates are all defeatable and have a lot of baggage.
24.) The entire world despises George W. Bush.
25.) The American people KNOW that they have lost a lot of respect around the world and there is healthy shame requiring redemption.
26.) We still have The Nation magazine (Please subscribe, will you?)
27.) The Christian Right is in disarray and has no candidate to get behind.
28.) Jerry Falwell is dead.
29.) Al Gore's message of Global Warming is now accepted by even Fox News.
30.) Al Gore had a world-wide rock festival, won an Oscar, an Emmy and the Nobel Peace Prize all in the same year.
31.) The majority of military families are voting Democratic now.
31.) The amazing Howard Dean is the Chairman for the National Democratic Party.
31.) There is a moveon.org.
32.) There is a buzzflash.com
33.) There is a dailykos.com
34.) AND THERE IS THE DEMOCRATICUNDERGROUND.COM (Thank you Skinner, EarlG and Elad so very much!)

Take some cheer will you? As dark as it has been and still is in many ways, we can, if we can hang together, take back our country. In spite of our healthy differences, everyone here at the DU is playing a part. You are making a difference. I believe that. So, cut your yourselves just a little slack. OK?

:hi:

18. Two more bonus reasons: Mark Foley & Tom Delay went bye, bye.
The tide has turned. The American people are slow at times, but when they do finally catch on that they have been burned and conned, and when they then turn on someone --- as they have really turned against Mr. Bush --- well, there's hell to pay.

Tell your sister that the tide is turning and it's a big one.

30. How could we forget those asshats? - See also:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is still under the microscope from the Kentucky press over his office's involvement in smearing Graeme Frost. In an editorial entitled "McConnell versus truth," The Courier-Journal writes, "It's clear what Mitch McConnell knew and when he knew it. It's clear he deceived the public."

and

CONGRESS -- McCONNELL CAUGHT LYING ABOUT SCHIP SMEAR CAMPAIGN: Last Thursday, media reports revealed that Don Stewart, the communications director for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), sent an e-mail pushing reporters to cover the right-wing smear campaign of 12-year old State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) recipient Graeme Frost. But the next day, McConnell claimed his office was not involved. "What was the deal with the e-mail from your staffer?" a local reporter asked McConnell. "There was no involvement whatsoever ... None," responded McConnell. The right wing continues to push this smear campaign in order to slander the popular children's health program. This week, TrueMajorityAction released an ad featuring two-year old Bethany Wilkerson, who was born with a serious heart problem and received health insurance through the SCHIP program. Like the Frost family, the Wilkerson family has already become the subject of right-wing attacks. "The issue really at hand is one of bad behavior," said the National Review's Mark Hemingway. Heralding the arrival of a "new toddler-aged human shield," right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin writes that "the Wilkersons made a choice."

It's important to measure our progress and face the facts. And the facts are that the tide has turned and they are on the run.

Thanks. I love your state and how you preserved Mark Twain's home and the one next door to it that belonged to Harriet Beecher Stowe in Hartford. You almost got us Ned Lamont. Next time. :hi:

157. Well here's hoping
I mean I havent read the artical yet but...

The military and their booseters hate the Neo Con Job pulled on them and military families have begun voting Democrat more than Republican.

The religious reich is probably pissed that we don't live in a dominionist theocracy yet.

And the economic conservatives are soulessly selling everyone out and getting frustrtated with the electorate in general.

However...

The monied elite are now hedging their bets by backing a few select Democrats as well (read Hillary).

Just think of one of the most bassackwards states that doesn't even have enough sense to keep its fake cowboys "home" on the "ranch". Trust me when I say I've never been happier to be from a place as opposed to still suffering in that place! I will never leave the great Northwest, if anything, I will go further North. The thought crosses my mind more often than I would care to admit. I joke that Seattle's tourist slogan should be, "Seattle, It's Almost Canada!" Please don't look up what our actual slogan is, it's well, embarrassing and shows that alcohol, coffee and city planners should never, ever be mixed (there is no such word as "Metronatural"!!).

94. Doolittle is not only in trouble with the FBI. His Democratic opponent has raised more money
in one of the reddest districts of California. Charlie Brown almost beat him in the last election and we saw already a bunch of Charlie Brown bumper stickers. I can't wait to but mine on our car :)

Here is more about Charlie:

http://www.charlieforcongress.com/article.php?uid=469

Here is an article about the fund raising:

http://www.sacbee.com/111/story/434495.html

WASHINGTON – Rep. John Doolittle's fundraising is trailing all but one of the declared candidates seeking his congressional seat, a further indication that the federal investigation into his relationship with jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff is chipping away at his support for election to a tenth term in the House next year.

The Roseville Republican said in a report filed with the Federal Election Commission late Monday that he had raised $50,308 in the three-month period ending Sept. 30, bringing total receipts so far this election cycle to just over $296,000.

<snip>

On the Democratic side of the race, former Air Force officer Charlie Brown was way out front with $212,000 in receipts during the third quarter and almost $496,000 for the election cycle.

Brown came within three points of beating Doolittle last November and announced last month that he will run for the seat again. So far he is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

111. Think I'll have a beer on this one Zephyr. It's Friday!
Just read about Dodd putting hold on FISA bill. Lovin' it.

Tomorrow could be dreadful with George in command, but, for today this is fun.

I now I am.

143. Yeah, that DemocraticUnderground is one wicked crowd alright.
Late Breaking News has been the fastest source for liberal news in the U.S. Skinner, EarlG and Elad really did a great thing, didn't they? And the mods who keep us all in line (me, too) are the best.

115. Thanks David - great to have a thread with a positive bent
I'll have to have a glass of wine to celebrate.

Add the noname person who said "You go to war with army you have not the one you wish you had." Glad that he is gone too! Although I have heard that they let him lurk around the Pentagon.

150. Tony was such a great letdown. I'll never figure that out, but Brown looks better.
Thanks to the UK for sending us the flu vacines when our corporations couldn't produce enough.

And just when Tony Blair goes, the French go and pick a rightwinger. I am in a strange universe indeed.

There are millions of us here in the U.S. trying to turn this thing around. We've a long way to go, but the tide is turning.

If we just keep the idiot bastard from invading Iran now.

And that jeaous, petty little shit who resides in the White House must be fuming over Gore's Nobel Prize. What poetry.

131. SO YOU SOUND LIKE A GLASS-IS-HALF-FULL KINDA PERSON...here are my 35 anti-reasons
HERE ARE 35 REASONS NOT TO LET YOUR GUARD DOWN----- (FROM A GLASS IS HALF EMPTY PERSON)

1 bush is still the president
2 condi is still globe hopping
3 the dick is still in his undisclosed location
4 the supreme court slants the wrong way
5 hillary is taking money from too many shady sources
6 the really great candidates are either low in the polls OR not running
7 i haven't had a raise in 4 years (okay... maybe that is my own issue)
8 all sushi in america is brought in and profit to that republican reverend so i had to give up sushi
9 we still have troops in iraq
10 did i mention that bush is still president
11 fox news is still on the air (did you ever notice that you never see fox news and comedy central in the same room?)
12 the rich are still getting richer, and the poor poorer
13 until we get stem cell research going right i don't think the democrats in congress will ever grow a spine
14 senator craig is holding the official 2008 GOP convention meet and greet in stall 5 of the minniapolis airport
15 not enough liberals send hate mail to the gop congressmen and senators of their choice
16 we are not making enough progress with fossil-less fuel
17 o j simpson still preempts any war news
18 the dow is falling faster than the bush twins at a beer bash
19 fred thompson's wife is still a hot draw
20 the gop are bring out their bag of wedge issues and the media is eating it up (gays, illegals, etc)
21 kucinich can't get any respect because even OUR party thinks he looks goofy (autobio movie to be played by woody allen)
22 mukasey is still allowed to speak in public
23 the gop can still team up with the president to kill kids through a lack of insurance
24 there are more balls on a pool table than in a meeting of democratic leaders in congress (except for nancy who has a special set made for those occasions)
25 the gop still controls the voting machines
26 the gop still controls the media (most of it)
27 dubya is still president (i think i have made my point)
28 dubya is all over condi, like white on rice
29 washington d.c. still has no representation in government
30 new orleans will never look like old orleans because the gop controls the money there
31 they're not serving pretzles at the 2008 gop convention
32 the evil-gelicals will still vote gop because they are too stupid to realize when they are being used
33 the rednecks will still vote gop because they are convinced that they are in the promised land
34 the upper-middle class will still vote gop because they are convinced that they might one day be rich
35 colbert isn't really running for office

sorry amigo but i am going to have the same cry-in-my-beer weekend until this gets fixed

156. Great list!
Bravo!

The wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine.

As the republican base grows ever smaller, ever out of sync with common sense, may there be light at the end of this dark post millennium tunnel.
