Saudi does the crime, Iraq & Iran do the time
Why is it Saudi Arabia provided 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 and according to the Joint Congressional Inquiry and Sen. Bob Graham, Saudi intelligence supported two of the hijackers, but we shifted the blame to Iraq?

Now Saudi provides more foreign fighters in Iraq than any other country, nearly half of the total, including the car bombers, suicide bombers, and al qaeda who are universally hated by the Iraqis themselves, but we blame Iran for fueling the insurgency?

There seem to be two possible explanations:

  • No matter what the Saudis do, we will look the other way because they already have oil contracts that are satisfactory to big oil.

  • They are doing Bush a favor by making trouble he can blame on someone else.

If it had happened just once and gotten this scapegoat someone else response, I would say the first explanation seems slightly more plausible.

But when they do the same thing, Bush responds the same way, and in both instances it serves his policy goals and more importantly the financial interests of his cronies, is it really plausible to say the Saudis are a loose cannon when the cannon always helps Bush?
