http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=engSamples collected from Gulf waters earlier this week by the Alabama Department of Public Health have revealed the presence of red tide cells along Alabama's beaches east of Dauphin Island, the agency said this afternoon. Red tide, fairly rare along Alabama's beaches, results from the build up of tiny sea organisms called dinoflagellates. The microorganisms emit a toxin that affects the central nervous system of fish, paralyzing them and stopping their breathing. The phenomenon gets its name for the discoloration it causes in water when the organisms reach very high concentrations. In humans the toxins can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems, particularly for those with conditions such as asthma and emphysema. )
