On a lighter note: Woman hammers out warning to Comcast
Woman hammers out warning to Comcast
Mona Shaw, 75, was so fed up with her service that she took the matter in her own hands.

By Neely Tucker

WASHINGTON -- Sometimes truly American virtues arise in outlaws who -- by dint of heroic but questionable endeavors -- display the mettle of the national character.

For instance: The Dillinger Gang, robbing banks (and destroying mortgages) when banks were foreclosing on the poor. Stephanie St. Clair, matron of the numbers racket during the Harlem Renaissance, striking a (dubious) blow for both gender and racial equality. Junior Johnson bootlegging liquor during Prohibition (the benefits of which were self-evident).

Fear not, fellow Americans! In these dark days of war, pestilence and Paris Hilton, a new hero has arisen. She is none other than 75-year-old Mona "The Hammer" Shaw, who took the aforementioned implement to her local Comcast office to settle a score, and boy, did she!

4. I'm hoping I don't have
constant problems with Comcast. It is the only high speed internet available out here in the country. It's it or dial-up.

6. I loved it....cause I feel for her.
When we lived in Maryland in an apartment complex, our cable went out. I called the company and couldn't understand a damn word the person on the other end said. I said get me a supervisor NOW. Well when the supervisor got on the phone I told her I did not mind them hiring people with Indian accents, but not to put them answering the phone.

I then told her that my cable was out and had been out for two hours. She assured me that it wasn't Comcast because I was the only one complaining and that she would send some one out in about a week to check MY connections. I told her it was not my connections, my son had taken them off and put them back on and the cable still did not work. She said well they would have to wait til at least five people called in that was their policy and hung up. Well the next morning I called back and was told the same. In the meantime I saw that the common area between our apartment and the one next door was torn up. I told the woman that was probably the problem that the cable had been cut and that's why no one else had been effected. She assured me everything was ok.

That afternoon I called the head of the Cable Committee of our county and explained the problem, told him I was sure the cable was cut because of the digging (to put in a new water system) and that I had called Comcast about five times and they wouldn't come. I asked him why they approved a company with such asinine service. He said he would call me back in half hour. He did and said the first thing next morning someone would be out. The guy came and of course he had to check my connections and the connections in to the apartment and then he noticed the digging. He checked it out and found the cable was cut he called someone to come and repair it immediately.

The next day the vice president of Comcast Operations called and gave me her cell phone number and asked me to call her instead of the County commissioner if I had a problem in the future. About a week later I got a letter from Comcast giving me 20 dollars discount on my bill. So from then on I did not fool with the company I went straight to the head.

14. Local cable commission is the way to go
I have involved mine twice in disputes with past providers, one being Comcast, both times for trying to pull a scam about hundreds of dollars owed for unreturned equipment (which in fact had been returned). It is, sadly, the only way to get the attention of these bastards. Good for you for doing so!

BTW, I've had RCN for about four years and they have been very responsive at both local and corporate levels. I highly recommend them if they are in your area.

7. The only thing that could have made this better...
is if upon calling 9-11, the police told the receptionist that they'd show up next tuesday, between the hours of nine and five.

10. I have no choice unless I want to
go back to dial up. I have had a couple of problems but they did resolve them quickly.

Dial up is so slow and sucks but I have to say that Earthlink dial up was very, very reliable.

13. That manager that left the couple waiting outside for two hours

and then hauled ass had to have been influenced by Bob Newhart in Catch-22.

From imdb.com ...

Major Major: Sergeant, from now on, I don't want anyone to come in and see me while I'm in my office. Is that clear?
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir? What do I say to people who want to come in and see you while you're gone?
Major Major: Tell them I'm in and ask them to wait.
First Sgt. Towser: For how long?
Major Major: Until I've left.
First Sgt. Towser: And then what do I do with them?
Major Major: I don't care.
First Sgt. Towser: May I send people in to see you after you've left?
Major Major: Yes.
First Sgt. Towser: You won't be here then, will you?
Major Major: No.
First Sgt. Towser: I see, sir. Will that be all?
Major Major: Also, Sergeant, I don't want you coming in while I'm in my office asking me if there's anything you can do for me. Is that clear?
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir. When should I come in your office and ask if there's anything I can do for you?
Major Major: When I'm not there.
First Sgt. Towser: What do I do then?
Major Major: Whatever has to be done.
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir.
