Unbelievable: Reid Praises Rush

By Carrie Budoff Brown

Oct 19, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(The Politico) News flash: Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) just praised Rush Limbaugh on the Senate floor.

Yup, the same Reid who lashed out at the radio show host earlier this month and rounded up 40 Democratic senators to sign a letter to Clear Channel boss Mark May, urging him to repudiate Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" comment, which was interpreted by some as an attack on soldiers who oppose the Iraq war.

But oh, how the storyline has changed. Limbaugh put the letter up for auction on Ebay, and it is now fetching more than $2 million. The proceeds will benefit Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides scholarship assistance to Marines and federal law enforcement personnel whose parents fall in the line of duty.

"What could be a more worthwhile cause?" Reid asked today on the floor. "I think it's really good that this money on Ebay is going to be raised for this purpose. When I spoke to Mark May, he and I thought this probably wouldn't make much money, a letter written by Democratic senators complaining about something."

7. Reality check time.
Two million for a letter chiding Limpster? Not freekin' likely. This reeks of propaganda tricks. My guess is that the "high bidder" is a Limbaugh pseudonym.

This is just too crazy for me to buy it.

10. You could be right!
Pathetic, isn't he? Just for attention. But it's against eBay policy to bid on your own auction as well as shrill. It looks like shrill to me.

21. Ya mean limbaugh would cheat?
Like hiring someone to call up and act stupid and pretend to be a liberal? He'd never do that would he? And just what does he need with viagra when on a trip with male friends to a country which allows child prostitution? Is he a wacky complex purveyor of conservative values and a spokesman for the bush administration or what? And how bout that support for the sanctity of marriage. wow, no wonder he is so loved.

33. Um, yeah.
Harry Reid in the Democratic Senate Majority Leader. It doesn't matter to the fascists how conservative he is - they backed the GOP.

12. Actually, this is probably the smartest way to handle it.
It was crafty as hell for Limbaugh to auction off the letter and to donate the proceeds to a military charity. Whether you hate him or not, you have to admit that was a genius PR move. Reid would look like shit if he ignored the whole thing and he can't really make a negative comment about it. So, the best and most graceful way out is to say that giving the money to a worthy charity is a good thing.

Reid handled it with class - which will, in turn, rile the RWers no end, being as they have none.

17. Except for the fact that it hands rush ammunition
I mean you do have a good point, but rush will use this to the max. I still think he should have kept silent about this, at least until there was some confirmation that the money was actually raised, and that it wasn't someone connected to rush.

26. As much as I hate Rushbo, this was a good move by Reid, and
getting money to the families of slain vets is a winner of a deal. I have to admit that Limbog played this one right, but I am shocked he'd be parted with his money.

Edited on Fri Oct-19-07 05:14 PM by OnceUponTimeOnTheNet
for that Marine Corps Foundation, 4 Million with rushs matched part. All due to a letter he sent.

A well known philanthropist won the auction, and rush is out 2 million. LOL. Well done Reid!

The fweeps were going ape shit over this Reid maneuver earlier today.

edit~ The fweeps are still freaking over this. Too GD funny.

23. Who won the auction? Betty Casey, Philanthropist
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/10/bidding-over-2m.html
some excerpts~
But today comes word that a Wasghinton, D.C. area philanthropist, Betty Casey (or bettyc588, as she is known on Ebay) is going to pay over $2 million for a letter Senate Democrats wrote to Mark Mays, President of Clear Channel, asking him to condemn Rush Limbaugh for the "phony soldiers" comment.

Rush Limbaugh himself put the letter up for auction on EBAY. Limbaugh sits on the board of the foundation and he has reportedly said on his show that he will match the winning bid -- a total of $4.2 million for the foundation.

Casey was described in 2004 by the Washington Post as eccentric and press-shy. She had at one point tried to create a lavish $50 million mayoral residence for the mayor of Washington, D.C., but those plans fell through amid squabbling with city officials. Casey donated the land for the mansion to the Salvation Army, stunning city leaders.

25. The way eBay bidding works
This loonie bid at least two million to exceed some prior maximum bid. That requires at least two raving loonies. Thus my skepticism.

GOP philanthropist bids 2 Mil, Rush is going to match it and 4+Mil going to HIS foundation? Any records on his foundation? This is very interesting.

31. Hey Harry,
Hey Harry, let me tell you what it means that the ramblings of a drug-addled hate talk host were bid up to 2 million dollars. It means that republicans have no decency, too much hate, and way too much money.
