SCHIP, family values and the republics
Under Reagan the republics have positioned themselves as the guardians of family values. Sex and corruption scandals by individual members of the republic party have warped the family value platform - however the recent crop of republic candidates continue to wear the uniform of the Family Value guardians as they pander to the religious right

The Democratic party has been fairly weak in finding a position on family values, although the recent scandals of the republics have helped the Dems by default, (i.e. republics shooting themselves in the foot)

Bush's veto of SCHIP and the failure to override that veto (mainly due to the republics in the house) gives the Dems an opportunity to reframe the Family Values issue

We must begin by looking at "Talking about Family Values" vs "Practicing Family Values" - in other words Practicing what You Preach. In this respect the republics have failed to Practice what they Preach, and in more than just the sex and corruption scandals.

Family values are more than a slogan, more than a few paragraphs in a speech and certainly more than photo ops.

The failure to enact SCHIP highlights the republics distain for families. The Republics DO NOT VALUE FAMILIES. If you value something you take care of it, you nurture it, if a member of your family is sick you do what it takes to take care of that person.

The Dems need to stress that they VALUE FAMILIES and are able to put action to those words.
