Bill Donohue takes on Lipton Onion Dip (Firedoglake)

Late Nite FDL: Get Thee Behind Me, Demon Onion Dip!
By: TRex

the devil's recipe secret

Why anyone takes that steaming turd of a man Bill Donohue seriously is beyond me. But like all Right Wing extremists, it seems all he has to do to get on TV is show up at the studio and it's lights, camera, action, and the paleo-pundits of the traditional media just sit by and chuckle benignly while Donohue spews his hateful bilge about Jews, gays, women, movies he's never seen, music he's never heard, and the perils of liberal bloggers, who are one of the greatest threats to our society, yes! Right behind Lipton Onion Dip:

Prior to Bill Donohue leading his Republican smear campaign against John Edwards, the President of the Catholic League was most famous for accusing the Lipton corporation of perpetrating an anti-Catholic "atrocity" in the form of–an onion dip commercial.

For those who missed it, Lipton ran a print ad in the June 13, 2001 edition of The New York Press featuring a person holding a bowl of onion dip while waiting in line to take communion–the implication being that this person planned to dip the Eucharist in the onion dip.

Reasonable humor? Clever Madison Avenue marketing? Not according to Bill Donohue. In his eyes, the onion dip ad was an anti-Catholic "atrocity."

In a sternly worded press release, Donohue claimed that the ad offended "the belief that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus Christ," and then referred to Lipton's parent company Unilever as a "monster," adding that "For the elites at Unilever to allow their ad department at Lipton to insult Catholics like this is the height of corporate arrogance. And stupidity."

5. Next step: offer on eBay an onion dip on the surface of which we claim
is the image of the Virgin.

Let's see Bill handle that one.

6. People other than Catholics take communion.
How does the insane zealot Doonohue conclude that it was a Catholic communion? Why not Lutheran?

He's a fucktard ... a total fucktard.

20. As a Lutheran, I'm not too fond of sacrament desecration either

But I guess I can assume that this was meant to be funny, not hateful, and let it slide.

29. As a nominal Missouri Synod Lutheran myself, who taught in a Catholic high school ...
... and attended a Jesuit college, I find Donohue's faux outrage to hypocritical in the extreme. "Heretical" humor is so common, even at the communion rail itself, that it's gotten banal.

I remember how a few years ago at my mom's ELCA church the pastor sent out a bulletin that said that parishoners should be more careful to conduct themselves with the solemnity appropriate for the sacrament. I agreed with him. This is the time when god himself comes down to be with us, and it is proper to show some respect at this period in time. Last week in church I noticed a young couple sitting in front of me (both about 20) who came in right before service started and almost throughout the service they had their arms around each other. During confession they parted for a bit, but after that they were inseperable. Certainly inappropriate for worship, but then came the consecration and they were separated, and while waiting to go up, I saw the young man hold his head in his hands and slump. It is when confronted with the true body and blood of christ that pretense drops and we are forced to contrition before god.

7. Donohue is a fucking moron,
AND the ad is offensive and stupid.

But is it an anti-Catholic atrocity? Hardly (and I'm obviously a Catholic).

Donohue is the atrocity.

8. When anyone rants and accuses others in public
of such wrong doing one wonders what the equally awful personal demon could possibly be that is gripping this man.

The poor pitiful shame driven man.

9. Everyone knows that holy wafer would not hold up in onion dip
it melts the moment it hits any moisture...

Now if they used real bread in Mass...then onion dip would be feasible.

14. Let's see
the wafer IS the body and the wine IS the blood so those taking communion are actually practicing canibalism and Donohue's going to bitch about them wanting dip with it?

15. As a proud Catholic, who remembers when
Catholics were truly discriminated against in this country,
I find Donahue an embarassment. My Church is no longer some
weak victim, and I am proud of the Power the Church now holds.

These Groups and not just Catholic Groups trivialize the
true struggles the Catholic Church has gone through in this
country.

The Media does a disservice to America by letting these blowhards
use up air time trivializing. My faith and My Church are
much too important.

Pretty soon we will be afraid to open our mouths for fear of
offending someone and having some TV tyrant come down on our
heads. Be afraid, very afraid.

24. How long did he wait to rant about an ad from June 13, 2001???
That being said, I don't believe Madison Avenue should hold the Eucharist up for mockery as a marketing tool. They are free to do so, but I don't like it.

I agree that this idiot, like so many others, does not deserve the media exposure he inexplicably receives.
