DEVELOPING STORY

Updated: 4:09 a.m. CT Oct 22, 2007
MANAMA, Bahrain - Two U.S. Navy sailors were killed and a third was critically wounded early Monday in a shooting incident on a U.S. military base in Bahrain, the U.S. Navy said.

The Navy said the incident was not terror related and was under investigation.

The shootings took place in the barracks on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base around 5 a.m. (10 p.m. ET), the Navy said in a statement.

The two sailors were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, the statement said.

Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it about an hour after the incident.

No other details were immediately available. Telephone calls to the Bahrain base were not immediately answered.

1. No other details were immediately available.
Equals: "we still have to make up our Tillmanesque cover story"

2. Obviously sailors should not be allowed to keep and bear arms.
:sarcasm:

3. Is this happening as frequently as I think it is? So how do families
cope when their loved ones come home in a box, and not because of fighting the enemy there?

5. No it has remained at the same rate for a while.
Bahrain has a shooting about twice a year. Alot of Naval Bases do, Bahrian should be no different.

8. Thanks for the links. Do you have any ideas how many soldiers
throughout the occupation zones in Iraq and elsewhere, not just NAvy, have been 'offed' by their own? That's really what I recall reading; seems like a lot of soldiers are dying mysteriously when no 'enemy' is around, a la Tillman.

9. I have not seen the stats but I would imagine it is slightly higher
due to it being a little easier to get away with it.

But Bahrain is not in that category, it really is very similar to any other Naval Base in CONUS with a very stressed out population who is not getting laid (no families) by anyone but the Russian and Thai Prostitutes in the hotels and each other. By looking at the "gender spread" of the assailants and victims here I think that they "laying each other" might be the cause of the problem.

12. They do
I have lived in Navy towns for the past 37 years and it does happen. Also when my husband was on a ship off the coast of Bahrain back in the 80's and they were suppose to be pulling in to Bahrain after being out to sea for 2 months, so we here in the states were waiting to hear from them as knowing when they were pulling in, we heard nothing. My phone rang off the hook ( I was the Ombudsman for the ship) finally 2 days later I got a call. Some guy stabbed another sailor 40 times because the guy was bullying him and he couldn't take it anymore. That's what happens when you are stuck in tiny quarters over a long period of time tensions rise and some take matters to a tragic end.

11. Damn
Tragic beyond words. This probably would have just as easily happened if they were all state side but it makes you wonder how much of the stress of deployment played in this soldier/sailor going over the edge.
